Legion Baseball is Back - Again, Maybe

The game of cautiously optimistic wait-and-see continues for the Glasgow Reds this year. But hope is winning out. “As long as we get to Phase 2, we will have a season,” said Board President Mike Pehlke.

Recent reporting said that American Legion had canceled their season nationwide, leading to confusion for players and fans. “The media got it kind of confused,” Pehlke explained. “Legion canceled their insurance, or supplementing our insurance, but not the season.”

The reasoning behind that decision has to do with fairness - some regions of the country will not be able to have a season, and the American Legion did not want to provide funding to some regions and not others. Those areas that are opening and have their own insurance will have a season.

The Glasgow Reds do have insurance and will be playing Legion baseball this year, unless the American Legion does decide to move forward with cancelling their season. However, Pehlke says the team here will have a season, provided Phase 2 status is reached in the state, whether it is through Legion or the creation of a club team under Montana Baseball.

If the option of playing under a club team is how the team is forced to go, it will be a stop-gap measure for this season only, with plans to return to a full Legion season for 2021.

Practice at this time is ongoing for the team while following recommended health guidelines.
