Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Seven Golden Scotties Awarded
The Scottie All-Sports Banquet looked a little different this year. Normally held at St. Raphael's gymnasium with hundreds in attendance, a meal provided by the Scottie Booster Club and a keynote speaker detailing life experiences, the banquet honors and awards student athletes, recognizing their outstanding achievements throughout the school year. For the first time, this year's event, held on May 14, was streamed on Facebook Live where coaches and athletic director Brenner Flaten were in the Glasgow High School library while student athletes, their families and supporters celebrated in their own environment.
The event, which was emceed by Flaten, provided the opportunity for fall, winter and spring sport coaches to reflect as well as recognize athletes who earned a varsity letter, Academic All-State, All-Conference, All-State as well as sport specific awards including most valuable, most improved and coach awards. Another difference for this year's awards ceremony was the absence of a recap of spring sports, whose season was cut short due to COVID-19. Softball head coach Ryan Hartwell, golf head coach Todd Truscott and track and field head coach Tim Phillips recognized participants who came out the first week of practice while providing insight on what the season could have been.
Both golf and softball saw an increase in participation numbers the first week and both coaches were excited to see how the season would have played out. "I got a pretty good idea of the talent of our program the very first week. Coach Smith and I are very happy with the numbers that came out this year," stated first year golf coach Truscott. "Looking forward there's a lot of work to do and grow and become better as golfers, that's why Coach Smith and myself will be giving golf lessons this summer to any Scottie golfer. Please contact Sunnyside Golf Club for any info."
Students who participated in fall and winter sports saw many successes during their season. The cross country team won sixth at state for the girls and fourth at state for the boys. The volleyball team was crowned District 2B champions, placed second at Northern B Divisionals, punching their ticket to State, the first time in nine years. The football team placed third in Northern B, qualifying for the playoffs. The boys and girls basketball team both placed at Districts while the girls placed fourth at Northern B. The wrestling team placed second at Eastern B/C, punching their ticket to State, which they brought home the trophy as State B Champions.
In addition to their successes on the courts and mats, athletes who participated in fall and winter sports, lettered in their sport while also maintaining a 3.5 grade point average or higher were recognized as Academic All-State during the event. There were 10 students in cross country, 11 students in volleyball, 12 students in football, four students in boys basketball, 12 students in girls basketball, five students in wrestling, and 12 students in cheer.
After the coaches gave their comments, recognized their athletes and recapped the season, seven Golden Scotties, a record in the history of the recognition, were awarded to senior athletes who participated in athletics all 12 seasons of their high school career, maintained full academic eligibility for all eight semesters of their high school career and maintained no infractions of Glasgow High School training rules throughout their high school career. This year's Golden Scottie awards were presented to Keely Fossum, Taylor Pederson, Anika Peters, Laura Ross, Alec Boland, Jaysen Turner and Tim Wageman. This year's recognition was the first time since 2017 student athletes, managers and/or cheerleaders were awarded the achievement. "When you have seven kids who contributed to our school, school culture, and obviously Scottie athletics, it's a class we are going to miss greatly," stated Flaten. "This group has clearly bought into, my version of, what I call Scottie pride."
Also recognized was the Outstanding Female Senior Athlete, Keely Fossum, who participated in four years of volleyball, four years of basketball, one year of softball, three years of track, while achieving a cumulative GPA of 4.030 in addition to a number of sport accomplishments. The Outstanding Male Senior Athlete, Alec Boland, was also recognized. He participated in four years of football, four years of basketball and four years of track, while also achieving numerous sport accomplishments.
Flaten ended the recognition with words of wisdom for athletes continuing with their Scottie career and even athletes who might be thinking about the next level. Even though the Glasgow facilities are closed as a result of COVID-19, all athletes are encouraged to touch base with their coaches and be proactive regarding off-season training. "Don't let this time of uncertainty derail your personal goals. Keep striving to make yourself better during this time," stressed Flaten.
