Scotties Wrangle In The Mustang Invitational

The Glasgow Scottie Wrestling Team claimed the top slot at the 2020 Mustang Invitational on Feb. 3, in Malta. The Malta Invitational marks the last tournament of the regular season as wrestling heads into the post season Divisional tournament in Huntley Project on Feb. 7 and 8. The Scotties' success on the mat in Malta maintained the team's top ranked Class B status heading into the Divisional meet before taking on State in Billings the week after.

"We wrestled really well in Malta," said Scottie head coach Jory Casterline, before adding that every grappler on the team "did their job" in Malta and set the team up for a strong win going into the post season. "We're looking very good for Divisionals," Casterline told the Courier.

The Scotties finished in Malta with 200.5 points, over 40 points ahead of second-place Cut Bank and 53 points ahead of third-place Havre. On the top spots of the podium for Glasgow were Colten Fast, John Cremer, Dylan Nieskens, Cooper Larson and Mayson Phipps, who all combined earned a total of 118 points for the Scotties. Kaden Zimmerman claimed the number-two spot in his weight class; Mason Donaldson and Jake Kuka put up third-place performances; and Jack Cornwell rounded off the podium places with a fourth-place finish in the 126-weight class.

Casterline said he was pleased with how the season has turned out for his team, but admitted that being ranked number one throughout the season gave the year some added obstacles. "It's been challenging," explained Casterline. "We've been ranked number one all year long so people have been chasing us." He added that the ranking had not really influenced the team since the placement is only on paper and has little weight on what could happen in the post season tournaments. Nevertheless, the consistency with which Glasgow has held onto the rank in 2019-2020 has no doubt influenced competition and strategy going into the Divisional tournament.

As for Huntley Project, Casterline's goal is to get every competitor competing in the Divisional tournament out and into the State tournament, a feat, he says, will require some upsets and some strong performances from some of the team members. "We've got a job to do," said Casterline, "and we've got to win out."

Divisionals in Huntley Project begin on Friday, Feb. 7, and continues through Feb. 8. The top four placed competitors at the Divisional tournament will go on to wrestle at the Metra in Billings on Feb. 14 and 15, for the state title.
