Scotties Finish Top Slot for Class B in BZN

The Glasgow Scottie wrestlers braved weather and distance to take on 31 different schools at the Tom LeProwse Bozeman Invitational on Jan. 3 and 4 for the first set of bouts in the newly minted 2020 year. When it was all said and done, Glasgow had amassed enough points - 94 in all - to finish in the top half of schools at 12th place. Out of Class B schools, however, the Scotties claimed the top slot, only falling behind a litany of Class AA and Class A schools such as Great Falls High, Billings Senior, Rapid City and Bozeman High School.

Discussing the invitational with the Courier, Scottie head coach Jory Casterline said he thought the team competed well. Listing off the team's accomplishments from the weekend he counted Dylan Nieskens's third place finish as well as what he called "avenge" matches from Nieskens and senior wrestler Mayson Phipps. In fact, Nieskens beat out two competitors that had pinned him in Great Falls at the most recent meet in Bozeman and Phipps avenged an earlier season loss to Bozeman's Tom Walk Up - a top ranked AA wrestler in the 285 weight class.

"That's your measuring stick right there," said Casterline discussing the match ups where Scottie wrestlers are beating out competitors that were winning those bouts earlier in the season. "We're getting better, especially with those core guys." Casterline said that each weekend the team is improving and "that's what we're looking for."

When asked what he was looking forward to in the coming weeks of the season, the Scottie coach joked "a week of practice" before adding that he was looking forward to the Cowboy Classic in Miles City on Jan. 10 and 11. "That's another quality tournament for us," explained Casterline. "That will put us up against some other Class B schools." He said the team took first overall against Class B schools in Bozeman but he expressed caution about what that means, especially when talking about other top ranked schools in the region, such as Huntley Project. Casterline said he expected the Cowboy Classic to "give us a more realistic look at Huntley Project" than what they got in Bozeman.

Casterline gave a shout out to the junior varsity wrestlers as well who he said, "put some matches in too," in Bozeman. He credited the tough wrestling crew with strengthening both programs by offering the varsity some tough practice partners and working hard to prepare for the varsity mats in future seasons.

"Some of those younger guys we have great expectations for," said Casterline. "Some of them need to be ready to turn the corner now."
