Glasgow's 19U Split Games on Home Ice

Glasgow's 19U Ice Dawgs hosted their first home games Dec. 13, 14, and 15, at the Valley Event Center with a pair of games against both the Havre Ice Hawks and the Salmon Rapids. The Dawgs split the teams, losing to Havre and besting Salmon, ending their weekend with a 2 and 2 record.

The players were pleased with their weekend. Kylie Lagerquist told the Courier, "I think it went well, really well." Her teammate and sister, Shanice Lagerquist added, " We had two younger girls who came up and played with us [Kimber Dulaney and Halle Hunter], these fifth and sixth grade girls who played with us, played like 17-year-olds. They impressed all of us, even the coaches."

First on the docket was Havre, who took the first game with a score of 5-1. The Ice Hawks jumped out to a first period lead, scoring three goals while Glasgow failed to get one past the Havre netminder despite outshooting the guests 10-7 in the period.

Glasgow came back in the second period when K. Lagerquist put her team up on the scoreboard, scoring an even handed goal at 13:34. Glasgow's goalie, Elizabeth Nyquist turned away all seven of the Hawks' shots.

Havre added two goals in the final period of play though, securing the win. Shots on goal stood at an even six in the third, giving Glasgow 25 for the game, while Havre registered 23. K. Dulaney served Glasgow's only penalty, spending two minutes in the box for tripping in the first.

The Dawgs were back on the ice Saturday for a pre-dawn game against the Salmon Rapids. Having shaken off the disappointment of the previous evening, the skaters came out hungry. The girls kicked off the game with 3-0 lead in the first period and did not let up, putting up 11 goals to Salmon's 4 for the win.

Dulaney got the puck past the Salmon netminder first, with the assist from Ava Lloyd, early in the game. S. Lagerquist notched a short-handed goal minutes later to give Glasgow the 2-0 lead. K. Lagerquist added a third goal with 26 seconds left in the first, giving the Dawgs a 3-0 lead to end the period.

The second period belonged to the Dawgs, who racked up four more goals, while the Rapids put up only one. Lloyd lit up the lamp first for Glasgow with help from Tatum Provencher. S. Lagerquist put the Dawgs on the scoreboard again at 10:11, and Provencher, assisted by Tori Pehlke, made it 6-0 at 8:08. Provencher found the back of the net again in the second, with just four minutes to play. Salmon slipped the puck past Nyquist as the clock ran down, with seven seconds left before the intermission.

The Rapids were not ready to give up the fight though, coming out in the final period to fire the puck at Nyquist 20 times, converting on three of those shots. Glasgow, however, proved the stronger team, scoring four times on 11 shots.

Salmon scored twice in the third, before Provencher, assist from Pehlke, got Glasgow going. Lloyd nailed her second goal of the game with assists from Mayme Collins and Provencher. Dulaney put Glasgow up on the scoreboard again with 6:32 left to play. Salmon scored their final goal of the game at 3:22, but Glasgow wasn't done yet. Provencher closed out the game with a hat trick at 1:35 with the assist from K. Lagerquist.

Nyquist turned away 39 of 43 shots for the Dawgs while Glasgow put 25 shots on goal. Provencher served three two-minute penalties, on calls for interference, unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing, though her teammates came through on special teams, denying Salmon any power play goals.

Glasgow faced off against Havre that afternoon looking to avenge their loss, but Havre took the victory again with a final score of 3-0. Havre logged a goal in each period of play, putting 20 total shots on Nyquist. Glasgow outshot the guests, putting 23 shots on net, but were unable to get past the Hawks' netminder. Glasgow kept their side of the game relatively clean with only Emma Cook serving time for tripping. Havre served four penalties for a total of eight minutes in the box.

On Sunday, the Ice Dawgs were back on the ice for another morning game against Salmon. Glasgow came back strong, defeating the visitors 6-1. Pehlke put the Dawgs on the scoreboard midway through the first on one of seven shots her team put on net. Nyquist faced only two shots in the first 17 minutes of play.

Glasgow came alive in the second scoring four goals to Salmon's one. Pehlke logged her second goal of the game but the Rapids answered back seconds later, to bring them within a point. Cook added an insurance goal with help from K. Lagerquist and Dulaney to fire up her team. K. Lagerquist added her own goal with 7:08 left. With under a minute before intermission, Provencher shot the puck past Salmon's netminder, giving Glasgow a 5-1 lead.

The third period proved to be a defensive battle, as Pehlke, assist Provencher, registered the only goal of the period to claim the hat trick. Nyquist faced 16 shots in 51 minutes of play and Glasgow put 17 shots on Salmon's goalie. K. Lagerquist, slashing, and Emma Cook, tripping, each served two minutes in the sin bin in the third while Salmon served six minutes on three penalties during the game.

K. Lagerquist said, "We're getting about halfway through the season. We're going to work hard every practice and that's what will get us there." S. Lagerquist added, "I am excited to see how the rest of the season plays out." Both girls expressed gratitude to everyone who supports them, "We want to say a special thank you to our coaches, Paul Provencher and Aarong Johnson. And our parents for sure!"

The 19U team next travels to Kalispell for the Winter Classic tournament, Dec. 27 through 29, where they will face teams from Bozeman, Flathead and Missoula. S. Lagerquist told the Courier, "They're going be some really tough competition, but I think we could pull something off."
