Take Fourth on Home Mat
The Glasgow Scottie Wrestling Team fell just out of the top three at the Scottie Invitational on Dec. 14 claiming fourth place with 119 points. The Scottie grapplers placed behind three Class A schools, with first place going to Sidney with 311 points, second place Custer County with 162.5 points and third place Dawson County with 130 points.
Scottie Head Coach Jory Casterline said he thought the invitational on the Scottie's home turf went well considering the team had four wrestlers out due to illness. Regardless of the shorthanded line up, the team claimed three of their four duel match ups on Dec. 13 and took fourth overall on Saturday.
Still Casterline didn't give much weight to the idea that they had finished behind three class A schools. "Two were beatable," he said in a matter of fact way, "I think if we were healthy we'd have been behind Sidney."
In the end, the Scotties had four wrestlers hit the final match but only Colton Fast claimed a first place finish in the 132 weight class. Kyler Hallock (160 lbs), defending Class B State Champ Dylan Nieskens (182 lbs) and Cooper Larson (205 lbs) all claimed second place finishes. Mayson Phipps (285 lbs) and Ty Kittelson (182 lbs) claimed fourth place. Mason Donaldson (132) rounded off the placed finishes for the Scotties at sixth place.
A high note of the invite for Casterline was seeing some of the younger wrestlers step up and compete. "Our younger guys, especially our freshmen, are showing up," said Casterline, "So I'm pleased not only with our varsity but also with our younger kids."
Comparing the meet to Sidney, Casterline said the work over the week of practice heading into the invite added to their performance, especially in the areas of stance, motion and footwork and the team was working on attacking and being more aggressive on their feet.
"We're still focusing on getting out guys to attack more," said Casterline. The coach also said the team was working on wrestling the full match and not quitting or backing off part way through. "I tell these guys if you get pinned in the first round it's over," said Casterline, "You can't come back in the third."
The Scottie head coach said he was looking forward to the Holiday Classic at the Charles M. Russell High School in Great Falls this upcoming weekend. The JV will wrestle Friday, Dec. 20, in Fort Benton on the way down and then again on Saturday at Great Falls High School. The varsity, however, will be focused on the CMR tournament.
"It's a big weekend of wrestling," said Casterline. "Hopefully we're past the sickness point and we get healthy, compete this weekend and get into Christmas break and fine tune for that last half of the season."
Following the CMR Holiday Classic and Christmas break the Scottie Wrestlers will be in Bozeman on Jan. 2.
