Their Faces Say It All

First-grade students, Everett Pinder (l), Gwen Turner (c) and Karen Pedde (r) learned how to make pumpkin pies in Mrs. Annette Boyer's class on Nov. 25 at Irle Elementary School.

Mrs. Boyer has been making pumpkin pies in her classes for 20 years, 18 years with Kindergarten students, one year with fourth graders, and one year with first graders. "The age of the kids doesn't matter as they all loved the experience of making pies from scratch," Mrs. Boyer told the Courier.

The fun experience contributes to family involvement in the classroom which is important to success in school. Kids are able to invite their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends to participate.

Each student took home their own little pie to share with their family. The class also made a couple of large pies and homemade whipped cream to eat during snack time. "We count to three and then they all take a bite," Mrs. Boyer explained. "Most of them like it, some don't, but it's another way to get them to try new things."
