Scotties Served Only Loss So Far This Season

In their last home meet before Districts, the Lady Scotties hosted the Plentywood Wildcats on Oct. 16 after recognizing cross country, fall cheer and volleyball senior athletes. With the rush of an undefeated season, the home crowd making noise and the girls playing their hearts out, nothing could match up against the Wildcats as they beat the home team in five matches, 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 10-15.

This was the first game the Scotties have had to battle it out in five matches all season. However, the win for the Wildcats did not come easy. Throughout the game, the Lady Scotties achieved a comparable number of kills compared to the Wildcats, however Wildcats Liv Wangerin helped propel the team by dominating the net with 27 kills. "We just didn't have an answer for that," explained coach Somer Hoerster. The Lady Scotties did achieve 16 blocks, led by Laura Ross' five, compared to Plentywood's six, which showed they were able to successfully block Wangerin a few times.

Another key aspect to the loss for the Lady Scotties was the number of digs achieved by the Wildcats. Glasgow achieved 38 digs, led by Keely Fossum with 10, compared to Plentywood's 68. "They had several more digs than we did, so that tells me that they were able to put the ball down faster than we were and they were able to keep the ball alive on their side for longer periods of time," said Hoerster.

Even though the Wildcats defeated the Scotties perfect season, Hoerster is still very much proud of her team and saw many positives aspects to build on as the regular season comes to an end. "I saw my team do things in that match that I have been asking them to do all season. We served very hard and were very aggressive at the net. We also had some great digs on our side. I saw an intensity in them, especially at the serve line that I haven't seen really this season. They didn't get scared under the pressure and as a coach, I love to see that fire." explained Hoerster. "We like the the idea of being undefeated, but to me that also means as a team, we maybe haven't been tested enough in regular match play when we haven't even had a match that went to five games yet this season."

After an intense schedule the week before, Hoerster gave the Lady Scotties a long weekend off in order to come into the last week feeling good and refreshed. "We are excited for this week's matches and look forward to seeing how Wolf Point and Malta have improved over the season," said Hoerester.

The Lady Scotties will play Malta on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Wolf Point on Saturday, Oct. 26, both away, before leading into District matches on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, in Glasgow.
