Cross Country Keeps on Trucking

Boys Claim Second, Girls Claim First in Fort Peck

Under the shadow of the Fort Peck Dam and Powerhouses, the Glasgow Scotties Cross Country Team gave their visitors a run for their money. Sunny skies and a stiff wind made the course a great temperature for running but made taking on the wind a challenge at times. However nothing compared to the challenge faced by the runners dusted with prickly pear cactus needles from the course's start in a prairie field, but they didn't crush a single bird egg.

Claiming the top team slot was the Lady Scotties who defeated second place Havre by 13 points and third place Plentywood by 44. The team was led by Iris McKean who claimed third overall with a time of 20:24.5, Ali Cunningham placed fifth, exactly 20 seconds behind McKean, at 20:44.5 and Lauren Padden rounded off the Lady Scotties top three in eighth with a time of 22:36.8.

While discussing the meet Freshman Kira Beck felt the team performed a little below average despite the first place finish for the ladies, but she felt the support on the Scotties' home course was a strong showing. "I, personally, think that I could've done better on my time," said Beck. She added later though, "Overall it was a good turnout of support from the town."

The Scottie varsity boys brought home the second place spot following Havre by 16 points and leading Harlem by 11. Leading the team was Wilson Overby claiming third place followed by Carl Zabrocki at 10th and Bergen Miller in the number 14 slot. Boys JV had a good showing as well with a breakout performance by Reed Larsen who topped out at 19:42.7, earning him the fifth place slot for the junior varsity race. Colter Cumber also had a strong run coming in at sixth behind Larsen at 20:53.3. Rounding off the Scottie JV top three was Ben Rodriguez with an eight place finish for the JV race and a time of 21:22.4.

Lane Thompson, also a freshman runner, was pleased with the team's performance. He logged his second fastest time of the season in the low 19 minute range. Thompson added, "The rest of the team also tan well, but did not end up running what Mr. Karst was hoping to see." Thompson laid some of the blame on the wind, but did point out that a few of the runners had some of their best races.

The Scotties will run again in Plentywood on Saturday, Oct. 12.
