Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
End Homecoming Weekend with 3-0 Record in 2B
The Lady Scotties played host to two teams during Homecoming festivities this past week, Sidney on Sept. 19 and Poplar on Sept. 21. Both days of action notched two more wins for the Scotties, making the team undefeated in District 2B with a record of 3-0 and overall with a record of 4-0.
"It was a nice week being home!," stated head coach Somer Hoerster. The fans certainly appreciated the action on home turf this week. During the matches against Sidney and Poplar, the student fan section never once sat down, continuously cheering on the home team. With chants such as "G", "H", "S", after a Lady Scottie would serve the ball over the net, certainly provided distraction to the opposing team.
As the first match went underway against Sidney, which the Scotties dominated 25-13, it was apparent the fans once again helped break down the opposing team mentally, as they did with the Malta M-Ettes on Sept. 12. The Sidney girls showed frustration in their faces at each spike, serve and bump as the match went on. The Scottie girls would keep up the momentum and win the other two matches, 25-22, 25-21.
Laura Ross achieved eight kills of the team's 33 and Keely Fossum led with five blocks of the team's 10. "I feel overall we handled Sidney well. We started with really high energy and had a pretty smooth first game," explained coach Hoerster. "Games two and three we had some errors and lost some of our momentum, but still managed to win in three against a team that offered a big block and kept fighting against us. The thing I appreciate about my group is they don't freak out when they get down in points. They believe in themselves and each other and continue to fight and grind out points when we need it."
That fight and grind stayed with the Lady Scotties for their Homecoming match against Poplar on Sept. 21. Glasgow dominated Poplar in three sets, 25-14, 25-21, 25-4. Riley Noser led the team with nine kills of the team's 26 and in blocks with four of the team's six. The home crowd also pumped the team with cheering and support from the bleachers, chanting and dancing with each Lady Scottie success.
Even though it was a win, coach Hoerster was not happy with the missed serves and unforced errors the team had. "I'm not sure if a long week of festivities affected the group's focus or what really happened, but there were things that definitely could have been done better on our side of the net," she explained. "We missed way too many serves and our offense stalled a bit with hitters and errors. However, it's a win and we will continue to work on those items and continue to move forward."
The Lady Scotties will be hosting Wolf Point on Thursday, Sept. 26, and then will travel to Dickinson, N.D., to compete in the Dickinson Invitational. "We're excited to see some other teams play and look forward to a great full weekend of volleyball!" exclaimed coach Hoerster.
