ServSafe Food Manager Class Offered

Montana Department of Agriculture, your local health departments and Montana State University Extension work hard to make sure safe food is prepared and served in restaurants and other food establishments. Montana State University Extension helps by offering a national food safety certification program called ServSafe training statewide. This training is for those serving food to the public or who want to make themselves more employable by getting this managers certification.

Montana food establishments that serve food to the public are required to have a certified manager. A manager’s certification must be renewed every five years. If you are soon due to renew your certification or you want to make yourself more employable by obtaining a ServSafe Managers certificate then you will be interested in ServSafe classes offered by MSU Extension.

Topics covered in the ServSafe Managers training including: the importance of food safety; good personal hygiene; time and temperature control; preventing cross-contamination; cleaning and sanitizing; safe food preparation; receiving and storing food; and methods of thawing, cooking, cooling and reheating food

These topics are covered in the eight-hour class offered by Montana State University Extension. Participants in ServSafe classes take a 90 question exam. They must pass with a 75 percent in order to receive their national ServSafe certificate. Research has shown that those food establishments who have a certified food safety manager have fewer foodborne illness outbreaks.

Serv Safe Food Manager training will be offered Thursday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the Valley County Courthouse. Serv Safe Food Handers will be offered Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Please contact the Valley County Extension Office to reserve your place in this ServSafe Food Safety class, 228-6241. Reservations must be made by Friday, Oct. 4, so supplies can be ordered.
