Scottie X-Country Opens Up Season in Billings

The Scottie boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Billings for the Billings Invitational on Aug. 30. The meet marked the opening competition for the Scotties with the boys placing 16 overall for varsity and 14 overall for JV. The girls varsity ran only three competitors and did not receive a team score, but the JV girls came in at 13 overall.

On the boys side the Invitational welcomed 29 teams bringing 153 varsity runners and 267 JV runners. For the girls there were 27 teams bringing 128 varsity competitors and 220 JV runners.

Cross country coach Rod Karst said he was happy with the meet and how the racers ran. “We grouped pretty well, so that is positive too,” said Karst. He added, “We have a long way to go for conditioning, but it was a pretty good start to the season.”

Top place finisher for the boys, Wilson Overby, who came in number 19 overall, shared the sentiment that the meet was a success. “It was a great start to the season, and a good way to see where we stand both team wise and individually.” Overby highlighted the loss of last year’s senior class, which included a number of top runners for the team, but he credited the team finish to some of the “younger kids” really stepping up at the meet.

“We still have a lot of work to do if we want to be competitive at state,” said Overby, “but I thought we did well as a team, especially for the first meet of the season.”

In the top spot for the girls in Billings was Iris McKean placing 12th overall. She felt the race overall was a tough opener for the young team, but she still felt the Scottie runners handled it very well.

“I was happy to see some of the freshmen stepping up and becoming scorers (placing in the top five runner spots) for us,” said McKean. On the personal side she added, “I’m actually really happy with my race. The time I ran was over a minute and a half faster than what I ran in Billings last year, and I feel a lot stronger and faster.” McKean finished with a time of 20:22.13 in Billings.

The next cross country meet will be the Malta Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7.
