Hi-Line Eye Care Celebrates Five Years

Hi-Line Eye Care in Glasgow has helped meet the optometric needs of the community for five years, recently celebrating their anniversary on Aug. 4. Since opening their doors in 2014, owner and optometrist Dr. Haley Menge has provided many with not only the gift of better eye sight but also education on their overall health by just looking into their eyes.

Dr. Menge, who is originally from Saco, decided to plant her roots in Glasgow after determining Shelby was not the right place for her and her husband, Patrick Menge. "I graduated from Pacific University [in Oregon] in 2013 and moved to Shelby right after. It was just not the right place for us. After my husband was offered a position at the hospital, we decided to move to Glasgow. There was a need here for a practice, so I just jumped in," explained Menge. Since jumping in and opening the practice, Dr. Menge and her husband have added two sons to the family, two-year-old Luke and 10-month-old Andrew.

Dr. Menge decided she wanted to be an optometrist after getting glasses in the second grade. "I couldn't see anything. It was such a cool experience to have an eye exam. The eye doctor fixed me up right away and I thought it would be a cool job to have." She attended MSU Billings for two years before moving to MSU-Bozeman to finish her Bachelor of Science degree in cell biology and neuroscience. While attending school in Billings, she worked at Advanced Eyecare as an optician, which she credits with being so successful at her job now. "I can write the most beautiful prescription and without a good optician, the patient wouldn't know," said Menge. "Getting the optics of a lens is truly an art and not many optometrists have that experience. I couldn't have my practice without having the experience of the optician side of it."

At Hi-Line Eye Care, Dr. Menge offers a comprehensive eye exam, where not only does she look to see how she can improve a patient's vision to see better, but also looks at their ocular health. Based upon a patient's medical history and what else she sees during an exam, she also offers the ability to take pictures of the eye and a 3D scan of the macula and optic nerve. "Medical issues, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, can be detected by looking at the macula, optic nerve, and blood vessels," said Dr. Menge.

In addition to eye exams, she also provides assistance with eye emergencies, finding the right fit for a patient to wear contact lenses and also co-manages in treatment for glaucoma, retinal issues and refractive surgeries such as Lasik and cataracts. "I do it all. If you have an eye problem of any kind, come to me. I know a lot of people in different places. I work with retinal specialists and ophthalmologists all around the state and also in North Dakota," stated Dr. Menge.

At her office, Dr. Menge sees patients of all ages, including infants, even if their vision isn't entirely developed yet. "Vision impacts a child's development. I always want to make sure their eyes are tracking the way they are supposed to. As children get older, I check their eyes to view their overall health and by preschool age is when I look for more of a significant prescription," she explained. "When a child is one, three and five, there is a lot of development occurring in the child. These ages are big milestones to check their vision." She admits she has a soft spot for her pediatric patients. "When kids have learning and/or have academic issues, it's never thought about to get their eyes checked. When they do get their eyes checked, it's a world of difference," she stated.

Even though Dr. Menge graduated six years ago, she hasn't stop learning. She reads journal articles in her free time and learns new techniques as well as new ways of managing conditions. She also attends conferences to learn and keep updated on the new advancements. "Patients need me. I want them to be happy and healthy," said Dr. Menge as her motivation to keep learning, practicing in Glasgow, and expanding her services.

Future plans for the clinic include starting back up vision therapy for children, which Dr. Menge first offered when she started the clinic. Vision therapy helps strengthen the neuro connection between the eyes and the brain. "It can be pretty life changing for a child," stated Dr. Menge. Another future service includes offering a recycling program for contact lenses and their packaging. "It's so wasteful to throw away the contact lenses and the packaging, especially if you are a daily contact lens wearer," said Dr. Menge.
