Red Sunny Cup – They Have a Trophy

Glasgow Men Bring Home Ryder Cup to Sunnyside

"That was a good win for Glasgow." That rather understated summation of the Men's Ryder Cup Golf Tournament was offered by Ed Hopfauf. In fact, the tournament was dominated by the home team from beginning to end. And the coveted Ryder Cup is proudly on display at Sunnyside Country Club after spending several years in Malta.

The two teams of 24 men each hit the links Aug. 17, decked out in Scottie Red and Mustang Blue, each side gamely keeping up their longstanding rivalry. Glasgow came ready to play. Club manager Andy Newton said, "I don't intend to lose."

The day started out overcast and unseasonably cool, but the home team lit up the links. In three rounds of golf, Glasgow tallied 28 points to Malta's 14, with 6 ties up on the board. Glasgow put some of their best men on the fairways and it paid off. Jake Hughes turned in a clutch performance in the match play round, tying with Malta's Gordon Webb, who has been described as "possibly one of the best golfers in the state."

When asked who had a great day golfing, Newton did not hesitate to answer, "Steve Sukut. He won every one of his rounds." In match play, Sukut defeated Dave Skiff. In the best ball round, he and Hughes bested Rick Levesque and Skiff. John Sauthler and Kris Kuehn fell to Sukut and Keithe Thorson in the 9 holes of alternating play.

All members of the team played their part in bringing home the cup this year. "I want to thank our young guys," said Marc Swanson, adding with a grin, "And Calvin was on his best behavior."

Even after 27 holes of golf, the men were not ready to call it a day. A post-tourney derby kept many on the course as they continued to celebrate their big win under the sun that made an appearance that afternoon.

Though the tournament is over, golf season is not. There are a couple more weeks of league at Sunnyside and the course will remain open as long as weather permits. Hopfauf stressed, "The course is in great shape."
