Colbrese Cup Memorial Red Ball Golf Scramble

The sun may have taken its time making an appearance Aug. 10 at Sunnyside Country Club, but that did not slow down the golfers who took to the fairway for the annual Colbrese Cup Memorial Red Ball Golf Scramble. After all, it's always sunny at Sunnyside.

Under that sun, albeit blocked by some cloud cover, 21 teams competed for the cup. After 18 holes of golf, Team Crush T&R sauntered away with first place gross and the big W, making them the back-to-back champions. Expect to see Calvin (not Colin) Kemmis, Andy Newton, Chris Richter and Rocky Thompson back next August swinging for a three-peat.

Teams hit the course after a calcutta, courtesy of Myron Malnaa. With temperatures just slightly below last year (around 35 degrees cooler) the teams may have taken a couple of holes to warm up. But once they did, it was game on.

Thompson credited Newtron Bomb with kicking off his team's dominating play, "On the third hole, Newton hit a very rare Eagle on hole 7 to get us rolling. And he played lights-out all day." Newton was equally enthusiastic about his teammates, "Sinking putts and stabbing guts, Team Crush T&R came to play lights-out."

Uncle Milt's snatched first place net in the tournament put on by the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Milt Hallock, Cory Hallock, Jim Heath and Myron Malnaa combined forces to just outpace the second-place team of Lee Nelson, Carson Buffington, Mike Johnson and Jay Brooks.

C. Hallock laughed about his team's eventful win, "Well, my handicap was handy to have. Myron Malnaa shot at the wrong flag for both his red ball holes, and Uncle Milt used the grenade for par on one of his red ball holes!" Calvin (definitely Calvin, not Colin) Kemmis was complimentary of the first-place net team's namesake, saying, "Milt Hallock has the hair of Fabio and the power of John Daly. If he was 4'5"."

Coming in third place for net score was the team comprised of Ed Hopfauf, Shelley Hopfauf, Steve Sukut and Steve Hansen, just under a point behind Uncle Milt's. Claiming the title of Bottom Bouncers was the there-to-have-fun team of Lindsey Reyes, Tara Bulock, Brianne Stovall and Jolene Reyes.

When it came to individual hole prizes, Jake Hughes took home the big bucks for landing closest to the pin on both hole 4 and 6. The grand prize of $500 for each hole was sponsored by Hi-Line Ford. An additional $1,150 was paid out in hole prizes, including $50 for the dubious honor of most OBs, paid out to the team of Jed Kirkland, Trenton Wemmer, Billy Allestad and Taylor Hanks.

The tourney concluded with golfers and workers loading up plates with famed Gary Maczka steaks and fixings by Sandy Maczka. The Chamber wishes to thank all sponsors who donated for hole prizes and the raffle.
