GKST Brings Home Champion Trophy
The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team took a total of 25 athletes to Sidney this past weekend, Aug. 3 and 4, to compete in the 2019 State Meet. Swimming against Plentywood, Chester, Harlem, Roundup and Fort Benton for the class "B" division, GKST outscored their competition by 50-plus points, taking home the Class "B" State Title and bragging rights.
Helping the team with top six finishes were Rachel Billingsley, Raelee Dowden, Trevor Johnson, Katie Kaiser, Abigail Kulczyk, Allie Palm and Dalton Sand. All seven swimmers competed in two to three events during the meet, each achieving placements within the top 10. Sand and Kaiser helped launch the team in point status, by breaking both Federation and pool records. Sand broke the Federation record in the 200 freestyle and set a new pool record in the 100 freestyle. He also took home high-point honors for the Intermediate Boys Division with a total of 40 points. Kaiser set a new pool record in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She swam a Federation record in the 100 freestyle but was out-touched by Hayley Bender, of Bitterroot Swim Team, by two-tenths of a second.
The GKST coaches voted Sand and Johnson as the athletes of the week for their hard work and dedication, not only during the meet but during the season as well. Johnson set all new personal best times in his three individual events, the 50 freestyle, the 100 butterfly and the 50 butterfly. He worked hard all season perfecting his technique heading into the State meet and it paid off, as he beat many swimmers that were beating him in the regular season.
Sand's season was capped with personal best swims, pool records and high point honors. He achieved eight highpoint honors for the season. He also broke the 200 freestyle Federation record by 1.58 seconds. The Federation record for the 100 freestyle was on his mind to break all season long, and he was only .71 seconds away.
Another swimmer who overcame obstacles and worked hard was Grace Reyes. She perfected her breaststroke and butterfly strokes heading into the State meet and was able to place in both events against very tough competition. Dowden also set all new lifetime personal best times in her three individual events, the 200 IM, 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke, all while battling a serious knee injury.
"All 25 GKST state swimmers swam their hearts out this weekend and we couldn't be prouder," stated GKST coach Nicole Arnold. "This weekend's meet was full of great competition, amazing atmosphere and perfect sportsmanship."
