Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Dear Editor,
I just found out something and I wonder how many of you knew that on June 25, 2019, Governor Bullock ordered the state flag removed and replaced so he could fly the gay pride rainbow flag at our State Capitol for the weekend.
House Speaker Greg Hertz and Senate President Scott Sales called the decision "an unmistakable act of disrespect to our State and the people and institutions we serve and beneath the office of the governor."
I agree with them. I would like to know what gives him the right to remove our State Flag and replace it with something else. Our State Flag should never, never be replaced with any kind of flag. What is more, this is not the first time Governor Bullock has done his own thing concerning our State Flag.
In 2017, he did the same thing, only this time he flew the Japanese flag in place of our State Flag to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Montana's sister-state relationship with the prefecture (territory) of Kumanoto, Japan. The brave men of this country fought in World War II against the Japanese, and he throws it back in their faces.
House speaker Greg Hertz and Senate President Scott Sales also suggested that Bullock's decision is tied to his campaign for President. They wrote that, "If the Governor choose to hold this office while campaigning for President, he must do as all other elected officials do, and leave his political activism on the campaign trail and off State property."
Sincerely,
Karen Bender,
Glasgow Mont.
