Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Hosts Swim Meet

First-Year Swimmers Make a Splash

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) hosted its home swim meet on June 15 and 16 at the City Pool.

Other than an unexpected thunderstorm Sunday afternoon, the meet went smoothly, according to head coach Nicole Arnold. "The meet was cancelled with only about an hour left of competition," she explained, adding that the backstroke and the butterfly races did not take place on Sunday. For those swimmers who were unable to race in their events on Sunday, their preliminary times from Saturday were used to determine final standings.

The meet was the biggest one of the season so far with 245 swimmers participating in the two-day event. Glasgow had 38 swimmers competing with nine first-year swimmers making a splash in the pool. Arnold highlighted the newbie swimmers: Heath Hankins, Kacie Hankins, Halle Hunter, Jack Miller, Molly Miller, Shonna Taylor and Toni Williams. "These seven swimmers all swam their very best with giant smiles on their faces and the GKST can't wait to see how these up-and-coming swimmers are going to benefit our team in the future."

She also noted the efforts of Mitchel Winchester, who returned to swim team after a five-year hiatus: "He had a great first meet. He finds himself in a very competitive 15-19 age group. However, Mitchel held his own and placed in all three of his freestyle races."

"The last shout-out goes to Aubrey Farrar," continued Arnold, "who is a second-year swimmer that swam the breaststroke legally in her 50-breast exhibition race and on a medley relay. On top of this, Aubrey placed in all three of her individual events despite being at the bottom of her age group."

Leading the team with top three finishes were Rachel Billingsley, Raelee Dowden, Holt Huntsman, Trevor Johnson, Katie Kaiser, Abigail Kulczyk and Dalton Sand. Kaiser and Sand both earned high-point honors in their respected age groups by placing first in each of their three events for the weekend.

This week's GKST Athlete of the Week, voted on by the coaches, goes to Holt Huntsman. "Holt is our second Bantam of the year to receive this award," explained Arnold. "It was a very difficult decision this week since we had 38 athletes competing at our home swim meet. However, Holt was chosen because he not only had fantastic races Saturday but came back Sunday and continued to beat his P.R.s. that he had just set the day prior. In all of his races on Sunday he cut off time and even moved up one to two places in his events. Holt not only had strong individual performances but relay performances as well. Holt was on the Bantam boys free relay and medley relay that placed second both days with very promising times for the season."

Arnold is excited to see how the season progresses, especially with such an eager group of swimmers under her charge. "We're very excited to see what they can accomplish as they all make strides learning the strokes and perfecting their techniques."

The GKST will be competing in Roundup on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23.
