Competition Underway for GKST

Sand Shines in Chinook

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) officially started its season at the Harlem Invitational June 1 and 2. The team sent five swimmers to the meet and despite the fact that they competed with zero practice time prior to the meet, they did well overall. According to head coach Nicole Arnold, "Our swimmers were very competitive with the other athletes and got some much needed pool time and racing experience."

GKST more than tripled its representation when they sent 18 swimmers to Chinook on June 8 and 9.

The team had to struggle through a rainy, cold two-day meet, but turned in some very solid performances.

Leading the team with top three finishes were: Rachel Billingsley (two events), Raelee Dowden (three events), Abigail Kulczyk (one event), Ava Reyes (one event), Dalton Sand (three events), and Aaron Zoanni (two events).

This week's GKST Athlete of the Week, which is voted on by the coaches, goes to Aaron Zoanni. At Chinook this weekend, according to Arnold, the eight year-old "started his second season with the team on a high note. Aaron was able to qualify for the second day of competition in all three of his individual races. In both of Aaron's freestyle races he was able to drop a total of 7.5 seconds from his best times from last season. Aaron proved this weekend that he did not miss a beat during the off-season. The GKST and his coaches are looking forward to seeing what this young swimmer can accomplish throughout this season."

Sand picked up where he left off last season, earning recognition as the high-point winner in his age group with three first-place finishes. Arnold also highlighted other performances that stood out from the weekend: "Snow Saiz, who is the youngest swimmer on the team this season (age five), showed great composure and enthusiasm for all her events at Chinook. She also competed in the 25m freestyle with no assistance, which is a big feat for her age."

In addition, according to Arnold, Kulczyk had a big day, swimming close to her personal bests in all her events.

Glasgow hosts their swim meet this weekend at the pool with events being held on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16.
