Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Scottie girls' softball season came to an abrupt end this past weekend when all games at the divisional tournament in Billings were cancelled due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.
Huntley Project, Cut Bank, Conrad and Shepherd advanced to the state tournament based on regular season standings.
"That was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do," said head coach for the Lady Scotties, Ryan Hartwell. "Stand in front of a dugout full of high school girls and tell them their season is over. The seniors didn't know they had already played their last game."
Insisting they were ready to take on any team at the divisional tournament, Hartwell pointed at Huntley Project. "We were determined to beat Huntley," he said of the missed opportunity, "and they are heads and tails above anybody we've seen."
Reflecting on games held in Butte May 10 and 11, Hartwell was enthusiastic about the Scottie's performance. "They played fantastic. They really gelled well on the field and their defensive shifting was fantastic. Florence was really testing us out playing small ball: bunting, running, sliding; but we small-balled them right back. The defensive shifts were perfect. The girls didn't panic and stepped into the plays. It all just clicked."
Referring to a 21-3 loss to Havre earlier this season, he said, "That was probably our lowest point of the year. But, Havre lost to Ronan in Butte, 12-10, then we beat Ronan 9-3. Going into divisionals, we really felt we could beat anybody we wanted to. I really think we could have made it to state."
The Lady Scotties will move on to the next season without the talents of seniors Aurora Chappell, Micah Tweten, Devon Johnson and Madison Collinsworth. Filling their shoes won't be easy, but with a projected returning roster of equally-talented players and incoming freshmen, Hartwell is optimistic. "The future is looking bright for the Scotties."
