Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Scottie Track and Field program continues to dominate the 2B District as it secured a sweep of the district titles for boys and girls in Wolf Point on May 11.
The day was another dismal day for weather and the athletes likely struggled to perform at their peak throughout the day, but the kids in Northeast Montana seemed to take it in stride. The proof is in the results.
The boys earned their seventh consecutive District title and the girls finished with their third consecutive win. Additionally, there were six individual champions crowned along with the girls 4x400 relay. "We were very proud of the kids at the district meet on Saturday," exclaimed head coach Tim Phillips. "We've been pushing them very hard this year because we knew the district was becoming more and more competitive."
The boys were scored behind Malta until late in the day, but with contributions from several events, pulled ahead to win the title by 26 points. Phillips summarized some of the performances for the Courier: "Our milers did a fantastic job at the right time, as did our discus boys. We went 1-3-4 in the 1600m and 1-2-3 in the discus, which really turned things around. But some great foundations were laid down earlier in the day.
Coach Cap's (Kirk Capdeville) vaulters went 2-3-4-5-6 (Tim Wageman, Caden Gustafson, Ted Tryan, Colter Cumber, Stephen Bailey) to get us going big in the field events.
Alec Boland came up huge in the javelin with an 18 foot p.r. to win that event. (Brett) Glaser finished fourth and Eli Zeluff was sixth.
Brett was bouncing between the shot put, the javelin and the long jump all at the same time. Friday was the first time he'd gone down a long or triple jump runway in almost a year. But he came through and got fourth for us there, and then set a p.r. in the shot put to finish second.
Noah Lipszyc got sixth in the shot, which was pretty good for a first-year senior and enough to move him forward to divisional, despite getting sick from Oreo cookies after the Mr. Scottie pageant last week.
Jaysen Turner added a fifth in the long jump, one of two personal bests for him on the day.
Some of my distance runners I've still been training pretty hard, and they came out real flat in the 3200m. Plus, the competition has gotten so much better. Ellis (McKean) was second, Wilson (Overby) third, Merlin (McKean) fourth and Carl Zabrocki sixth. But they just weren't competing at a super high level, for them.
After that, we had a sad moment when Garrett Lloyd strained a leg muscle near his hamstring during the relay. He managed to hop the last 10 meters to hand it off to Colton (Pewitt), so we advanced our relay despite his injury. It just shows you the character he has to somehow find a way for the team.
Fynn Sukut gave us a solid fourth in the 300m hurdles, and then we picked up some decent points in the 800m. Ellis was third, and Merlin fifth with his personal best. Alec Boland ran his best 800 of the year to get fourth, and kudos to Jeremiah McCoy. He strained a calf muscle last weekend, but we got it to where it was feeling so-so this week. We made sure he wouldn't be doing any damage to it and got cleared to run, but I didn't expect much. He gutted through quite a bit of discomfort to finish sixth. That's the kind of attitude we are looking for.
Fynn set a p.r. in the 110m hurdles and got second, while our high jumpers managed to get us some points despite going into a headwind. Coach (Kayla) Larson was bouncing between coaching hurdlers and the high jump, but managed to get them all on. Jaysen got third, Alec fourth and Tim Wageman fifth in the high jump. Jaysen got back over to the triple jump and scratched a couple before getting a good enough mark to get to finals. Then he rolled a couple p.r.s, finishing third with 39' 8.5. Brett got fifth and Alec sixth.
Malta picked up some pretty big points in those events, and got more in the hurdles and the 100m to pull a little farther ahead. But Tyler Fitzsimmons had a solid second, Dylan Nieskens was fifth and Colton sixth in the 100m.
We had Garrett scheduled for the 100, 200 and 400m, and with his injury, we knew we'd lost some ground. But Dylan got third, Dexter Monson fifth and Tyler sixth in the 400m to help fill in the gap.
Our distance boys had a super competitive 1600, going 1-3-4. (Ellis, Wilson and Merlin). Dalton Sand ran real tough but just missed placing, as did Dameon Erb earlier in the 3200m. Those two freshmen were in the hardest distance runner district in the state and just about made it out. Look for great things down the road from those two.
After the 1600m, we took an 11-point lead and then Glaser calls to tell me he wants to talk to me. He gave me the news that we went 1-2-3 in the discus. Both of our volunteer throw coaches, Levi Sugg and Jessica Lewis, were gone so Coach (Wade) Nelson had to bounce between shot, disc and javelin all day. But, he got to see them throw and was pretty proud of that effort. Chevy Boos won it, followed by Ben Miller and then Brett, with a big p.r.
We held our own in the 200m, with Tyler and Dylan going 2-3, and Colton finishing sixth.
At that point we knew we had it won, and had some of the boys that were not moving on run the 1600m relay: Bridger Barnett, Ben Rodriguez, Zavier Urbin and Blake Lloyd.
We did lose some seniors. Bridger Barnett (who's been a joy to have out - his enthusiasm is very infectious), Jordan Billingsley (who has set p.r.s in the each of the last three meets), and Kaden Fossum (his knee was really bugging him on Saturday, or I know he would have advanced in the javelin). I've really enjoyed having them all be a vital part of our team."
In all, 16 Scottie boys set new personal bests in their events for the day, and they earned 45 slots at the upcoming divisional meet in Glasgow.
The Scottie girls pulled out their District title with a 54-point gap over Wolf Point and set 10 new personal bests before the day was done. They secured 38 slots at the divisional meet scheduled for Saturday.
Phillips reflected on the girls' performances: "We started off pretty well in the 3200m. Iris McKean had a 21 second p.r. to finish second, while Ali Cunningham also had a personal best to finish fifth. Lauren Padden didn't have a great run, but gutted out a sixth. Keely Fossum got sixth in the high jump, and fifth in the long jump, while Abrianna Nielsen finished sixth.
Our short relay wasn't perfect but was good enough for second. Alaina Sallee got a solid fourth in the 300m hurdles. Brennan (Peters) didn't have her best in the discus, but she's been very consistent throwing over 95' and got 97' 5 to finish fifth. Iris looked good in winning the 800m, and Emily Kolstad managed to get third but was fighting thru shin splits a bit. Lauren got fifth to get us a couple more points.
We cleaned up in the vault pretty good, with Cap's girls going 1-2-3-4-6. Emily was first, getting a nice vault just after the 800. Katie (Kaiser) was second, Anika Peters third, Hannah Toavs fourth and Tyann Graham sixth to pile up some points for us. Katie also got fifth with her season best in the javelin, and Tehya Campbell won it to get us 10 more points.
Alaina got third in the 100m hurdles, and then Blaire Westby finished third, Nora Neumiller fifth, and Anika Peters sixth in the 100m dash. That was good, because Wolf Point really had a lot of speedy girls in there. Then Blaire and Nora came back and ran the 400m. Blaire finished third, while Emily fought through to win it. Keely Fossum got fourth there as well.
In the shot put, Riley Noser just missed first, and Brennan Peters was right behind her in third. Tyann Graham had a p.r. as well, and squeaked into sixth.
Alaina got us some good points, finishing third in the triple jump.
Back on the track, Iris got second, Ali fifth and Brooke Westby sixth in the 1600m. Coach (Trint) Gamas' sprinters came through in the 200m, with Blaire second, Nora fourth and Abrianna sixth.
Though the time was a little slow, I thought our girls ran a very good 4x400m race. Alaina was hurting but refused to be replaced on her leg. Keely really attacked the first 200m hard, and had a very good second leg. Blaire ran third for us. She's a little out of 400m shape but still got us in contention. Then Emily cleaned things up for the win at the end.
Seniors we lost at district include Rachel Billingsley, who's really come a long way this year, and Natosha Sand needed her best throws and just didn't quite have enough today in the shot."
Glasgow will host the divisional meet this Saturday, May 18. Phillips is looking for more hardware for the Scotties. "We look to be competitive but there will be some really good athletes and teams here. I think if we just focus a little more and keep fighting and scrapping on Saturday, we'll be in the hunt for another trophy."
