Tracksters Compete All Over the State

Top athletes from around the region assembled at Scottie Field on April 30 for the annual Top Ten Track Meet.

Glasgow's head coach Tim Phillips was impressed with the Scottie's effort. "We didn't hit a home run every time in every event, but there were a lot of great performances," he said. "We had more breakthrough performances that are really impressing me."

Arguably, the most outstanding display of the evening was a record-breaking javelin throw by senior Tehya Campbell. Her mark of 128-8 shot her to the top of the school record board and unseated Tiffany Waters, who held the top spot since 2005 with a throw of 119-11. Campbell's previous personal best was 115-04, which she achieved earlier this season.

Ali Cunningham ran personal bests in both the 1600m and 3200m races, and Lauren Padden had a break-out night herself with a 49-second p.r. in the 3200m.

Brennan Peters waited until her last throw in the discus, but achieved a fourth-place finish and a personal best mark of 106-06.

The boys distance runners also made great gains in their races. "Merlin (McKean) had a huge breakthrough with a 5-second p.r. in the 1600m," noted Phillips of the senior Scottie. "He won that with a state qualifying 4:41."

Wilson Overby, who is still recovering from a serious injury, completed the 3200m 11 seconds faster than the state-qualifying time, punching his ticket to the big show.

"Dalton Sand also took 14 seconds off his p.r. he set Saturday," explained Phillips of another great effort. "He's cut 20 seconds in the last two meets alone."

In the throwing events for the boys, Chevy Boos and Ben Miller finished third and fourth in the discus. "That was a big competitive night for both of them," said Phillips.

Heading into the post-season, Phillips is just hoping the team can get healthy. "Overall, we're still working through injuries and some pretty tough viruses going around."
