Softball Steps Up at Slam

Following a less-than-stellar performance by the Lady Scottie softball team vs. Havre on April 23 (loss to the Ponies 20-1 in three innings), the girls were tasked with re-grouping and preparing for the Scottie Softball Slam held April 26 and 27.

So far this season, the Lady Scotties have left the coaches and spectators frustrated. Frustrated because the girls have the skills and capability to dominate the game but, "We've just lacked intensity and effort," explained head coach Ryan Hartwell.

The Slam started slow for Glasgow. They first faced Colstrip Friday morning and dropped the game to the Fillies in a four-inning 14-0 shut out. "They were sluggish," said Hartwell of the Scottie's effort. "A lot of what we've seen so far this season. After the game, I just told them they gotta find themselves. They needed to come together as a team and figure it out."

For the rest of the weekend, the Scotties did just that. "The girls were aggressive on the bases and our bats were super-hot all weekend," said Hartwell of the turnaround. "I was really impressed with the way they played."

Their next match-up was against Shepherd Friday night. Following recognition of four senior Scotties, Aurora Chappell, Madison Collinsworth, Devon Johnson and Micah Tweten, the Lady Mustangs took the field and Glasgow stepped up to the plate. It was a big showing for the Lady Scotties as they brought in six runs and allowed only three for Shepherd. The teams traded runs throughout the game, but play was highlighted by a phenomenal grand slam homer in the second inning by Chappell.

With darkness falling on the unlit field, the decision was made to suspend the game for the night in the bottom of the fourth inning. Play resumed the next morning with Glasgow leading Shepherd 18-11. Despite the obvious effort from the Lady Scotties, Shepherd came back from the deficit and won the game 24-22.

Immediately following the loss to Shepherd, Glasgow faced Great Falls Central. It was another good showing for the Scotties as they defeated their opponent 12-5. Hartwell utilized freshman Abby Engstrom on the mound for a few innings and had Chappell finish the game. Behind the plate for Glasgow, Laura Ross had a memorable offensive and defensive showing. In addition to a fourth-inning grand slam, she was instrumental in securing some key outs for the team.

In the field, both Johnson and Collinsworth showed some spark and contributed with some key plays as well. "Devon really stepped up as a leader this weekend," said Hartwell of the senior. "She was moved into the shortstop position and she really took on that role. She likes to play the infield."

Bringing their weekend to an end, the Scotties battled Cut Bank in their final contest on Saturday night. Despite a solid effort from Glasgow, the Lady Wolves eked out a 9-8 win after seven innings.

The overall performance by the Lady Scotties at the Slam verified what we already knew. The girls have the talent and ability to play softball and win games.

The Scotties are scheduled to be in Havre this Saturday, May 4, then will be in Sidney on Tuesday, May 7.
