Post-Season Meets Begin Next Weekend
The Scottie tracksters were in Great Falls April 27 as they competed in the Fairfield/Belt Invitational. Both teams finished in third place behind Seeley-Swan and Fort Benton.
"I'm hoping we turned a corner," said head coach Tim Phillips of the performance. "The weather was a little nicer, but still we dealt with pretty strong winds on and off throughout the day. But we saw the kids' attitudes improve a bit and they managed to fight through some things. I'm starting to see the things I had great hopes for back in March."
If the 34 personal bests set throughout the day is any indication, the Scotties are definitely starting to peak.
Additionally, three senior athletes and one sophomore achieved state-qualifying finishes in their events: Chevy Boos won the discus with his personal best, state-qualifying throw of 146-06, Ellis McKean will be representing the Scotties in his second long distance race after winning the 1600m in a time of 4:41.95, and Emily Kolstad secured her trip to state in her second event with her 1:01.10 finish in the 400m run. Riley Noser, who has been battling some injuries, auto-qualified for State in Great Falls with her third-place shot put of 35-07. McKean will also compete in the 3200m run and Kolstad in the pole vault. Katie Kaiser auto-qualified in the pole vault at the state meet with her 8'6" mark at the Cal Wearley Meet in Havre on April 3.
Phillips highlighted several other performances from the weekend: "For the boys, Alec Boland did a real nice job in his triple jump debut. Alec, Jaysen Turner and Fynn Sukut also got personal bests in the long jump."
For most of the boys, Glasgow had a really good day in the throwing events. "Brett Glaser continues to light up the javelin," said Phillips of the standout senior. "He was only a few feet behind the defending state champ, throwing 155'. Britt Fairclough also had a good personal best at 121." Boos and Fairclough also set personal bests in the shot put and Noah Lipszyc threw over 41 feet in the event. Senior Bridger Barnett improved his throw in the discus by about 12 feet, according to Phillips.
Dawson Boland and Fynn Sukut had their best performances so far in the 300m hurdles. "Fynn looked really good," noted Phillips of Sukut's efforts. "He's still got to get stronger and faster, but his form was great."
The distance races continue to be very strong events for the Scottie boys and E. McKean has already qualified for State in two races. Wilson Overby and Merlin McKean are also favorites to represent the team at state in both events. In the 3200, Dalton Sand, Carl Zabrocki, Jeremiah McCoy and Boland all achieved season and personal bests.
More personal bests were set in the 400m by Garrett Lloyd, Dylan Nieskens, McCoy and Tim Wageman. "Garrett really had a breakout race, going 54.41," noted Phillips. Nieskens, Colton Pewitt and Turner all had 200m personal bests, despite a head wind.
The 1600m run was a great display of the talented girls team. "Iris McKean took 23 seconds off her best time in the 1600m," explained Phillips. "That was a huge leap for her. Ali (Cunningham) and Lauren (Padden) had their best times ever, and Brooke (Westby) had her best in over two years in that race." He added that Cunningham and Padden also set personal bests in the 3200m despite fighting a strong wind.
Ellie Page continues to be strong in the 300m hurdles and she set a new best in the event on Saturday. "Alaina Sallee has been fighting some back issues," Phillips said of the veteran hurdler for the Scotties, "but laid it all out there in her race."
The throwing events for the girls weren't as successful as the boys, but there were still some good efforts. "Riley is starting to throw better as she gets healthier in the shot put and Tyann Graham set a p.r. on Saturday to cap off a good day for herself," explained Phillips. "The discus for girls was little awry with the wind, and we struggled a bit in the javelin as well, though Katie and Brennan (Peters) did have some pretty good throws. Tehya (Campbell) wasn't too far off her usual, but it wasn't her best day."
More personal best marks were achieved by Kolstad, Graham and Hanna Toavs in the vault, and Abrianna Nielsen, Keely Fossum and Blaire Westby in the long jump.
After competing in the Top Ten Meet here in Glasgow on April 30, the Scotties will be in Wolf Point on Friday, May 3, then will be at home on May 4 for the Hinsdale Invitational.
"We won't compete full force, but we will give the kids a taste of having to compete two days in a row like they have to do at State," explained Phillips. "I was pretty pleased with the efforts of most of our kids on Saturday, but I think the biggest lessons were in just how we deal with overnights in a hotel. Several got little or no sleep, yet they performed very well. So it was a good lesson in overcoming things that we think may hold us back."
He also noted that there is still a lot of work to do for both teams. "All the other teams in our district are starting to get their kids to a higher competitive level," he said. "But I finally like the direction we are headed. Peaking your kids is more an art than a science, so we'll get a little work in, but also start concentrating on the post season."
The District Meet will be Saturday, May 11, in Wolf Point, followed by Divisionals in Glasgow on Saturday, May 17. "This weekend is the last for our athletes to show us what they can do," said Phillips, "and what events they belong in as we have to narrow down the teams to five athletes per event for district."
