Approves School Calendar, Health Insurance
The Glasgow School Board met in regular session on April 10. All of the trustees were in attendance as well as school administrative staff.
The meeting began with the student representative report given by Merlin McKean, who noted that the popular Mr. Scottie Pageant is scheduled for May 6. Superintendent Bob Connors recognized Micah Tweten, Natosha Sand and Dillon Godwin for their accomplishments in BPA and the Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams for their recent state championship win.
With Connors’ recommendation, the board approved the re-hire of tenured staff and the following new hires: Todd Truscott, GHS and GMS band teacher; Rachel Pewitt, GHS math teacher; Paul Yoakam, GMS elementary teacher; Randi Klind, Carol Williams, MyKayla Lauckner and Steve Mayfield, substitute teacher / aide; Patrick Barnett, GMS assistant track coach; Gary Wageman, GHS volunteer track coach; and Debra Griebel, GMS volunteer track coach. The board also officially accepted the resignation of Grace Burns from her position as counselor at GMS.
Based on Connors’ recommendations, the trustees approved the following items: Renewal of MUST Insurance program for 2019-2020, which includes the school paying $503 per month for each school employee and having the total cost for health insurance for the school district total $766,572; the 2019-2020 School Calendar, which will show school starting on Aug. 21, and school ending May 29. The calendar also has Christmas break starting on Dec. 23 and students going back to school from the holidays at Jan. 2; Planning for Facility Condition Inventory Report; School Safety Transfer; and Budget Amendment Proclamation.
Policies and negotiations were discussed and acted on, followed by reports from the GEA, the principals and the superintendent.
During her report, Irle Elementary School principal Rachel Erickson noted that a recent chocolate fundraiser grossed $26,000 and will net the school $13,000. GMS principal Mike Zoanni said that the middle school play is gaining popularity and noted there were 660 attendees this year.
GHS principal Brett Huntsman discussed Childhood Hunger Week and praised Katie Kaiser for all she has done with the snack pack program. He also announced that Ellis McKean and Ben Miller were awarded MSU Honor scholarships and explained that it is somewhat extraordinary for two students from the same school to receive the recognition. Huntsman also explained that FMDH has expressed interest in offering an EMT class to the students at the high school in the future.
Brenner Flaten reported that he has received two resignations – one from the head cheer coach, Jorand Marlenee, and the other from longtime boys basketball coach Norm Braaten. He indicated that those positions have been opened and he hopes to fill them as quickly as possible.
The meeting concluded with the approval of the typical consent items: board minutes, district bills, account reports and travel leave requests.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15 in the district board room.
