Attorney General Tim Fox encourages anyone who has a Shopko gift card to use it as soon as possible, as Shopko will only be accepting gift cards as a method of payment until April 20.
Shopko announced on March 18 the company will be closing all remaining stores after Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings failed to restructure the company’s debt and save the retailer’s remaining locations. Among the stores to close were 11 in Montana. Since the announcement, the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection has been communicating with bankruptcy counsel for Shopko and was informed about the deadline regarding the usage of gift cards.
Court documents from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nebraska, said the order to close all stores occurred on Feb. 8, 2019, and those documents list the expected close date for all remaining retails locations as June 16, 2019.
Shopko Hometown is the only box store chain to occupy Northeast Montana. As a result of the company's collapse stores closed in Glasgow, Wolf Point and Plentywood costing those towns not only a place to shop but also numerous jobs. In Glasgow alone Shopko employed over 30 people.
