Unshelved at GCCL: Genres In Your Library

The adult fiction section of the library is full of a variety of genres that help readers define the types of books that they enjoy reading. The umbrella of fiction covers any book that is not completely true, even though some of the books have roots in actual events, such as historical fiction.

At the Glasgow City-County Library, we emphasize five main genres, although there are others. Books that fit into these five genres have stickers on their spines that classify them to make them easier for patrons to find.

Mystery books can be anything from cozies, which are gentle, to hardboiled, which are more graphic and violent, Usually a crime or murder has been committed and the reader attempts to puzzle out the solution while they read.

Science Fiction runs the gamut from fantasy to deep technological stories. Steampunk, cyberpunk and dystopian fiction all fit in this category.

Western books are a favorite in our library. They are usually set in the American Old West and incorporate lots of action. Guns and girls are major themes.

Romances can be mild stories of discovery or the more torrid erotica, that usually leaves nothing to the imagination. There are several subcategories such as gothic, regency, historical, contemporary and paranormal.

Christian Fiction are stories that can be every bit as exciting as their more graphic counterparts, but with a God-centered point of view.

Without special spine stickers, we also have thrillers, which can take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride; horror, which is generated to frighten or disgust; historical fiction, which is set during an actual period of history; adventure fiction, which is full of action; romantic suspense, which incorporate action along with romance; chick lit, which is often humorous contemporary women's stories; general or mainstream fiction; and literary or serious fiction.
