Scotties Finish Season with Two Individual Gold Medalists, Second-Place Hardware

Mayson Phipps takes on Carter Beer in his final match of the state wrestling tournament held in Billings, Feb. 8 and 9. Phipps finished third in the 285 lb. weight division.
The Scottie wrestlers clinched a second-place team trophy at the State Wrestling Tournament this past weekend, representing Glasgow with remarkable individual performances.
The tournament, held at the Metra Park in Billings Feb. 8 and 9, hosted teams from AA to C classes and packed the venue with coaches, competitors and fans.
Glasgow sent 12 grapplers to the tournament, which featured 45 schools from Class B/C. Five Scotties accomplished placing in the top five at the event.
Leading the team were Colten Fast at 126 lbs. and Dylan Nieskens at 170 lbs. with their first-place finishes. Also achieving podium status were Kaden Zimmerman with third place at 138 lbs., followed by John Cremer in fourth in the same weight class, and Mayson Phipps who finished in third place at 285 lbs.
"Our kids faced a lot of adversity in the blood rounds on Saturday morning to earn second place," explained head coach Jory Casterline. "Plus, we went 7-0 in those rounds and Huntley Project went 0-9. They fell on their faces."
Nieskens had to work hard for his win, with a huge semi-final match and a face-off against Colstrip's Cody Blaede, who prevailed over Nieskens at divisionals. Fast, who was on track to claim a state championship, wrestled with confidence. According to Casterline, "He was relaxed and having fun. His win sealed up second place for the team."
Cremer and Zimmerman wrestled each other for third and fourth place in their weight class, with Zimmerman earning the win with a 5-1 decision.
Phipps had to defeat Carter Beer of Columbus/Absorokee twice to clinch his third-place win. "He was a big boy," said Casterline of Beer. "I'm proud of Mayson for how he finished the tournament."
The second-place trophy is the 31st state trophy for the Scottie wrestling program.
