Lady Scotties Snap 15-Year Losing Streak to M-Ettes

It was worth the price of admission. On Jan. 11, the Lady Scotties brought the fans to their feet, and a losing streak to an end, when they defeated the Malta M-Ettes for the first time in 15 years.

Needless to say, head coach Travis Nielsen was pleased with the win. "They played really well," Nielsen said of the girls' performance. "They played with heart."

In addition to the steady offensive effort by the Lady Scotties, the game was also punctuated by very strong defensive work. Nielsen attributed much of the team's success to preparation. "Actually, we prepared mentally by watching a lot of film, and we came off a really good week of practice," he said.

Although eight of the rostered players contributed to the score, senior Tehya Campbell led with a team-high 10 points, followed by Keely Fossum with nine.

According to GHS Activities Director Brenner Flaten, 50 out of the last 51 games Glasgow played vs. Malta ended with the M-Ettes on top.

Looking back on the evening the Scotties had their last win against Malta, the Courier reported the game was held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, and a blizzard "raged outdoors" during the contest. Alexa Etchart led the Lady Scotties to the 54-47 win with her team-high 17 points. Denise Enebo added eight points, followed by Millie McIntyre with seven. Karissa Hughes, Tiffany Waters and Chelsie Pattison all put up six points, and Annie Strommen scored four. The head coach for the Scotties at the time was Todd Glaser, who is currently a teacher at GHS.

The Scotties will be in Saco to take on North Country on Friday, Jan. 18, then will host Sidney for Super Hero Night on Saturday, Jan. 19. Games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Saco and 1 p.m. for the home games on Saturday.
