Scottie Grapplers Kick Off 2018-2019 Season in Sidney

The Scottie wrestlers began their season with a busy, but productive weekend, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The grapplers kicked things off with duals on Friday night in Sidney and earned some extraordinary wins, defeating AA Billings West, 38-36, and the defending B/C champions from Colstrip, 48-26. They did finish with one loss to Dickinson, 48-16. “Those were some big wins for our kids,” said head coach Jory Casterline of the duals. “It carried us into the tournament the next day.”

That tournament was also held in Sidney, and is arguably one of the toughest tournaments that the Scotties will participate in all season. With 23 teams from all over the region, including Washington, Idaho and North Dakota, the competition is diverse and can sometimes be humbling. “You'll have high school freshmen wrestling seniors that have already signed to D1 schools,” explained Casterline. “It can be a real mental battle.”

The Scotties were able to achieve a top-ten overall finish despite starting out flat, as described by Casterline.

Individually, there were some notable performances. “John Cremer had probably the best weekend he's ever had,” said Casterline of the GHS junior. “I would even say it was a breakout weekend for him. I'm so proud of that kid.” Also displaying some grit for the team were Colten Fast and Jake Kuka. “Colten had a good weekend,” said Casterline. “Although he wouldn't admit it, I'm thinking he was having some flu-like symptoms. He battled through that and placed fourth.”

Kuka wrested for the JV squad and placed third overall. “He was just like a spark plug for our team,” Casterline stated of the freshman. “He's like 80 pounds, wrestling at 103.”

The Scotties have plenty of other tough challenges ahead of them, with the Bismarck Rotary, the Cowboy Classic and the CMR tournament topping the list. “They just have to wrestle six minutes,” said Casterline of the ominous matches ahead. “They just have to give their best effort at every tournament.”

This Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, Glasgow will be hosting their invitational at GHS. Duals will be held Friday beginning at 2 p.m. and the tournament will start Saturday at 9 a.m. Championship finals will be under the lights anytime between 4:30 and 7 p.m.
