Scotties Blank Baker with Last-Second TD

The Scottie gridiron boys waited until the last seconds of their game vs. Baker to make the play of the night.

The Oct. 12 contest held in Glasgow was stagnate for the majority of the night, with neither side making any progress on the field. Offensively, the Scotties struggled to score. They came within scoring position a number of times but could not capitalize on the opportunity. "I think senior night nerves had a lot to do with it for us," said senior Tayson Hoerster. "Plus, Baker brought it. They were ready to play."

Defensively however, the Scotties did their part and kept the Spartans from scoring the entire game. "Our defense dominated," explained Tel Aune, a sophomore linebacker for the Scotties. "We just fell apart in the red zone."

Head coach Pat Barnett seemed to agree with the boys' analysis of the game. "As a defensive coordinator, I'm very proud of them," he explained. "As a coach, we've got some kinks to work out."

"It was not a nice night for football," Barnett added, referring to the wind. His assessment of the conditions was verified by the National Weather Service in Glasgow. Winds shifted from the west to northwest within the first hour of the game with gusts up to 35mph.

Arguably, the biggest and best plays for the Scotties came at the end of the contest. "Kristian Price had a big sack at the end," said Barnett of the defensive effort. "Really, the whole game I knew Baker wasn't going to score because of our defense."

Offensively, the biggest play of the game went to Jesse Lee, a sophomore out of Hinsdale. With just 21 seconds left on the clock, Lee scored the game-winning touchdown with a three-yard run into the end zone.

The 6 - 0 win against Baker moved the Scotties up to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Northern B conference. Glasgow will travel to Malta to take on the Mustangs Friday, Oct. 19. The winner of the game on Friday will earn the number-two seed for the playoffs and will get to play on their home turf.

Barnett has nothing special planned to prepare for the upcoming match-up. "We're gonna watch film then we have two days to practice and a day to perfect our plays," he said with a shrug. "There's no school on Thursday or Friday, so that's a distraction," Barnett explained further. "At the very least, that usually means the kids aren't getting to bed early those nights."

Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
