Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Dorothy Alice Solberg

Dorothy Alice Solberg 91, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at the Daniels Memorial Healthcare Center where she had been a resident since January.

She was born on March 3, 1927, the first child to August and Carmel Devaurs in Merced, Calif. She was later joined by a sister, Dorris, and brother, August.

She grew up in Merced, graduating from Merced High School in 1945. It was at a dance she met a young Army Air Corp pilot, Vern Solberg, from Montana. They were married at Luke AFB in Arizona on June 17, 1945. Upon Vern's discharge he returned to his very rural home with his city-raised bride. This was quite an adjustment to the young newlywed girl, but she adjusted over time and eventually declared she always wanted to live on the farm. They lived on the Solberg homestead until 1950, when they bought an adjoining farm from Norman and Margaret Boe. It was there they raised their five children, Carole (Terry) Maier, of Helena, Ken (Cyndi), of Larslan, Debra, of Meridian, Idaho, Wes, of Scobey and Wayne (Candy), of Richland. Dorothy and Vern moved to Scobey for the school year until 1967, when they made the farm their yearround home.

She adapted well to her rural life role as farm wife, raising large gardens every year and processing the harvested vegetables for her family. She was also a lover of flowers and always had flowers blooming on every side of the house.

She and Vern enjoyed traveling in their motorhome, but their trip to Alaska was their favorite.

Dorothy was always active in her church, and Order of Eastern Star, later taking up ceramics and golf, which she enjoyed immensely. She spent many hours watching birds on the bird feeders and cutting out recipes from magazines.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings; and many brothers-and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren, Michelle McGuire, Trevor (Mary) Thompson, Derek (Judee) Solberg, Tiffany (Ryan) Hanson, Brad (Dannielle) Solberg, Brian (Barbara) Solberg, Cass (Hailey) Solberg, Tawny Solberg and Dylan Solberg; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family was very important to her and Grandma Dorothy (or) Great Grandma Dorothy was a favorite of theirs.

Services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m., at the Community Church of Opheim (formerly the First Lutheran Church in Opheim). Interment followed in the Lawndale Cemetery in Opheim. Music was provided by Cathy Bailey and Brad, Dannielle and Micah Solberg. Her six grandsons served as pallbearers and her three granddaughters as honorary pallbearers.
