Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Scottie wrestlers wrapped up their 2017-2018 season with a super showing at the state tournament in Billings Feb. 9 and 10.
Following a few "rebuilding" years, Glasgow entered this year's tournament with 12 state qualifiers and finished with six of those wrestlers earning individual places.
The team finished third overall with 120.5 points, bringing home the 30th state trophy in school history. Finishing ahead of the Scotties were Eureka in second place with 127.5 points and Colstrip in first with 196 points.
Matt Reyling, one of two Scottie seniors that qualified for the state tournament, was unable to repeat as state champion, but did wrestle back for third place by decision over Rylin Burns of Colstrip.
The lone junior representing the Scottie squad was Oden Hallock, who placed second in the 126 lb. weight class. He earned a trip to the championship match, but faced a tough opponent from Plains and was defeated by a 7-1 decision.
The bulk of the individual finishers were freshmen and sophomores, which is good news for the future of Scottie wrestling. Of five freshmen representing the Scotties at the tournament, two earned their way to the podium. Colten Fast wrestled the most matches for his team, finishing in third place after facing six opponents and Dylan Nieskens earned every bit of his second-place finish after wrestling an undefeated Nakoda Siegel of Colstrip.
Sophomores Keagan Thompson and Kaden Zimmerman also added points for the Scotties with Thompson earning fifth-place at 120 lbs. and Zimmerman with a third-place finish at 126 lbs.
The remaining six athletes representing the Scotties in Billings were Alex Ost, freshman; John Cremer, sophomore; Cale Swanson, sophomore; Tel Aune, freshman; Darrin Wersal, senior; and Cooper Larson, freshman.
