National Weather Service meteorologist Brandon Bigelbach gets ready to launch a weather balloon on Jan. 22. The ballon is attached to a radiosonde, which provides the Weather Service information on upper-air data. According to Bigelbach, with the help of the balloon, the radiosonde can ascend to an altitude exceeding about 115,000 feet and drift more than 180 miles from the release point.
