Remembering, Forgetting

To my readers, I have no real excuse for not sending an article for your weekly reading, except, I had a hard time REMEMBERING which day it was.

Like so many, my family got to battle that cold bug that seemed to make the rounds during the holidays. It seems that one of the current home remedies is the use of Vicks vapor rub. Of course, my generation has used Vicks for years. How many of you remember having Mom grease your chest with Vicks at night before bed? Now, you couldn’t just crawl in bed and let Vicks get all over the bed sheets, so your chest or throat needed to be covered. My mom and grandma always used a nice sized flannel rag to do the job, while other moms used an old piece of wool (maybe wool socks) to do the job.

I am sure that those dressings were really used to keep the warmth in and maybe to prevent the young ones from inadvertently getting it on their hands and into the eyes. Did the pin used to fasten those nice throat wraps ever come unpinned?

I noticed an article on the internet listing eight uses for Vicks. I guess the only one that was new to me was to use it on a cotton ball inserted in the ear for an earache. This did prompt me to read the label on my jar of Vicks. Did you know that it contains Eucalyptus oil? Now most of us have heard of Eucalyptus oil and its many uses today, but little did we know that we had probably been using it for years.

Now on to another subject. Thanks to the reader that left me some *extra large* home-grown eggs. What a fun surprise, but no, I did not find a double yolker in the bunch, but I am pretty sure you must have a rooster in your hens. Since I learned to always crack eggs in a bowl before adding to your cooking, it was great to get them.
