The Glasgow Squirt Ice Dawgs traveled to Sidney for a three-day tournament Dec. 15-17. Despite some minor obstacles, the Squirts came home with third-place hardware.
According to coach Carin Barnett, because of the way the brackets were set up, Glasgow was the only team that had to play an extra game. Additionally, the Ice Dawgs had the smallest roster at the tournament and had to compete against teams with three to four lines.
In game number one against Watford City White on Dec. 15, Glasgow blanked their opponent 10-0.
Goals: Bode Barnett 3, Charlie Cornwell 3, Brody Hansen 3, JP Cornwell 2. Assists: Halle Hunter 1.
Jacob Potter had seven saves in the net.
The second game for Glasgow was on Saturday, when they were matched up against Minot Black, and earned an 8-1 win. Goals: Barnett 2, C. Cornwell 2, Boland 2, Dulaney 2. Assists: Hansen 2, Barnett 1, C. Cornwell 1. In the net, Potter recorded 15 saves.
The toughest game for the Squirts was played against Minot Maroon on Saturday afternoon. "We came from behind on this hard fought loss," Barnett explained. "We were down 3-1 at the end of the second period. The kids showed incredible perseverance, determination and heart to not give up and put two more in the net in the third period. We pulled our goalie in the last 30 seconds to try to tie it up, but just narrowly missed the tying goal." Goals: Barnett, Boland, Hansen 1 each. Assists: Hansen 1. Potter: 16 saves.
In their final game on Sunday, the Ice Dawgs faced the Billings Bulls and earned a solid 7-3 win for the third-place trophy. Goals: C. Cornwell 2, Hansen 2, Barnett 1, Dulaney 1. In the net, Potter had another 15 saves.
"Looking at our stats you can see it's a total team effort out there," Barnett remarked. "They work like a team and battle it out for every puck on the ice. They have amazing heart and determination out there."
You can catch the Squirts in action when they play at home Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5 and 6.
