Virginia W. (Smith) Plouffe, age 94, of Wolf Point, Mont., passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Mont.
She was born Aug. 21, 1922, 54 miles north of Malta on the family homestead. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Lee M. and Loretta (Williams) Smith. She attended school in Lowrane and Loring, then graduated from Malta High School and later in life attended some classes in Bozeman.
She married John H. Plouffe on June 12, 1942, in Malta. They farmed east of Malta and in 1953 moved to Wolf Point and continued farming in Malta for several years. John passed away on Dec. 20, 1989.
Virginia went to work at the Roosevelt County Clerk and Recorders office in 1963 and on Jan. 1, 1971, she started her job as Roosevelt County treasurer, retiring Dec. 31, 1994. While Roosevelt County treasurer, she served two terms as president of the Montana State Treasurer Association and 12 years as chairperson for the Seven County Treasurers Association. She was appointed to a two-year term on the Board of Directors of MASBA.
The most important thing in her life was her family and friends, who she loved dearly. Her hobbies were writing poetry and painting, when she was not playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sons, Jerry John and Dan Edward; seven sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.
Survivors include one daughter, Diana Nygard and her husband, Robert, of Fort Peck; a daughter-in-law, Artie Plouffe of Findlay, Ohio; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, May 31, at 11 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wolf Point, followed by a luncheon at the church. Interment followed the luncheon at the Malta City Cemetery in Malta.
