Scottie Boys Win Opening Track Meet

Girls Finish Fourth, Phillips and King Qualify for State

The first track meet of the season drew 27 teams (215 boys and 145 girls) to Scottie Field, including one competitor from Riverton, Wyo.

The meet was held April 1, and as usual, several proms were scheduled for the evening. That's only significant because several athletes were only partially focused on the competition for the day, and many of them left early for various appointments. That being said, head coach Tim Phillips expects an improvement in the team score for the next meet.

Also typical, a strong, consistent wind likely hindered the performance of some of those competing. "The wind kept times slow, and our long and triple jumpers were headed straight into it," explained Phillips. For the most part, however, the veteran tracksters performed as expected, and the rookies had a good showing, too.

The Scottie boys easily claimed first place, defeating their nearest competitor by 48 points. Those playing key roles in the victory with first-place finishes in their events were: Benji Phillips, Luke Breigenzer and Merlin McKean. Phillips finished the day with first-place finishes in the 100m dash, the long jump and the javelin. Phillips easily qualified to compete in the state meet with his 207' throw, which is also the best in the nation as of press time. "I'm obviously pleased with Benji's javelin throw, said coach Phillips. "The wind wasn't the best for the jav, and he said he didn't have great form either, so we are hoping to get out a little farther." He also placed seventh in the shot-put with 39-01.00.

Breigenzer swept the hurdles with wins in the 110m and 300m, and McKean was the first to cross the finish line in the 3200m run. "Luke's hurdle times weren't where he wanted," Phillips explained, "but that wind was tough -up to 28mph gusts down the home stretch. And, he still won both."

"Merlin and Ellis (McKean) got us started in the 3200 - right where I thought they would be," said Phillips. "They were only a couple seconds off personal bests."

In other track events, according to Phillips, Colin Jamba didn't place but achieved a big personal record, and Cade Myrick started off real well in the 800m.

Phillips also noted that both Taylor Padden and Ben Miller had great days in the discus, although Miller scratched on his really good throw.

The Scottie boys also swept the relays, winning the short 4x100 (Luke Breigenzer, Tyler Fitzsimmons, Trent Herbert and Benji Phillips) and the long 4x400 (Ellis McKean, Cade Myrick, Luke Breigenzer and Brett Glaser) races. "One bad handoff cost us a qualification in the relay," said Phillips, "so I know the boys can get that qualified."

For the girls, Jordan Kulczyk and Katie Kaiser added significant points to the team total, with each claiming first place in an event. In addition to her first place in the long jump, Kulczyk finished eighth in the javelin. Kaiser was the top vaulter at the meet for her first-place ribbon. Junior Kaylee King, jumped a qualifying 5' in the high jump, punching her ticket to the state meet as well.

"We had some very good first time performances," said Phillips of the girls, "especially in the throws. Hannah Mickelson had a personal best in the discus and Regan Zerbe, in her first ever competition, wasn't far behind her. Katie didn't miss a beat from the end of last season in the vault. Brooke (Westby) had a pretty good start in the 3200 too."

Running in the relays for the Lady Scotties: (4x100) Brinlie Nielsen, Anika Peters, Kaylee King and Jordan Kulczyk. (4x400) Tyisha Begs His Own, Alaina Sallee, Brooke Westby and Jordan Kulczyk.

The Scotties will be in Havre to compete in the Cal Wearly meet on Wednesday, April 5, and will travel to Baker on Saturday, April 8.
