Audrey (Berntson) Smith passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at the age of 93.
Audrey, the daughter of Alfred and Norma Berntson, was born March 1, 1923, in Sanish, N.D., where she and her sisters, Thelma Berntson and Naomi Sherven, were raised and lived through their high school years. Another sister, Minerva, died in infancy.
She was confirmed June 28, 1936, at the Sanish Lutheran Church and graduated from high school in 1940. She attended college for two years at Minot State College and received her teaching standard certificate. She taught fourth grade at Watford City, N.D., for two years. She also subbed at Sunnyside and Larslan later while living on the farm.
In 1944, she joined the nurses' cadet school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The last six months of her nurses' training she worked in Browning, at the Indian Hospital.
She worked as a nurse in the Glasgow Deaconess Hospital following her graduation and later at Valley View home. She met Alden at Glasgow Deaconess Hospital, and they were married June 18, 1949. They had two children, Leland and Jacquelyn Lund.
Alden and Audrey lived on a farm in Richland until they moved to Glasgow and joined the First Lutheran Church. The last few years they lived at Nemont Manor.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Alden; a son, Leland Smith and his wife, Kathy; a daughter, Jacquelyn Lund and her husband, Steve; six grandchildren, Shane Smith, Joel Smith and his wife, Lara, Alana Zayden, Geoffrey Lund, Jessica Lund, and Jason Lund; and five great-grandchildren, Joey Zayden, Riley Smith, Annika Smith, Addison Lund and Aiden Lund.
A visitation was held on Thursday, Feb. 16, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bell Mortuary in Glasgow. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow, followed by burial at Highland Cemetery in Glasgow.
