Jane Southland

Jane (Cole) Southland, 95, passed away Jan. 30, 2017 at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood, Mont. She was born Nov. 19, 1921, to Elmer and Nana (Porter) Cole at the family farm in Daleview, Mont. She graduated from Whitetail High School and attended college in Dillon, Mont., where she received her teaching degree.

On March 3, 1943, Jane married Reginald Southland of Whitetail. They lived in Whitetail, where they maintained the family farm and raised three children.

In 1960, she and the children moved to Glasgow, so their son, Ross, could attend a special school while spending many weekends and summers back at the farm in Whitetail. Jane taught special education classes during the school years while in Glasgow and was active with Eastern Star both in Glasgow and Scobey.

She liked to garden, square dance, sewed many things, from tractor seats to prom dresses, and helped with the Whitetail 4-H club.

In 2013, Jane moved to the Pioneer Inn in Scobey, where she and Ross enjoyed living until she moved to the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood in 2014.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Nana Cole; husband Reg; brother Elmer Jr.; three sisters Cecil, Bette and Billie June.

Survivors include two daughters, Nanci Hackmann and her husband, Dallas, of Whitetail and Marilyn Parke and her husband, Jim, of Seneca, S.C.; one son, Ross, of Scobey; four grandchildren, Todd Southland, Kim Gillies, Jana Jackson and Bobbi Jo Hackmann; five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 2, at Zion Lutheran Church in Flaxville, Mont. with Pastor Charles Kelly officiating. Pallbearers were Todd Southland, Arlin Cole, Donny Cole, Larry Johnson, Tom Southland and Bob Southland.

Memorials may be made to the Whitetail Sports Club.
