Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Valley County's American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is soliciting applications for Girls State Session 2017 participants. The event is scheduled to be held from Sunday, June 11, until Saturday, June 17, at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.
Girls State is open to only 300 delegates across the state, making this a grand opportunity for high school girls to gain leadership and government experience. Applicants need to have completed their junior year, show interest in government and current affairs, show strong leadership skills and have high moral character.
Last year, Glasgow High School sent two delegates, Jazmine Foster-Shaw and Morgan Guttenberg to attend Girls State. According to Renee Clampitt of the ALA, "This is a hands-on learning experience about local, county and state government. The delegates may participate in a Mock Trial and debate delegate written legislation. They elect city and state officials along with two young women to attend Girls Nation in Washington D.C. at the end of July."
Girls interested in submitting applications can do so by going to mtlegion.org, click the Auxillary tab, then click the ALA Girl State tab. Applications must be printed, completed and submitted to Clampitt at [email protected] or by turning them in to GHS Counselor Amy Capdeville. Applications are due February 14, 2017. At press time, the ALA had received zero applications from GHS students interested in attending Girls State.
