Glasgow Hosts Wrestling Invitational

The 21st annual Scottie Wrestling Invitational was held Dec. 10 at GHS. Glasgow hosted 19 other teams for the event, and with four wrestling mats being utilized throughout the day, Scottie Gymnasium was buzzing with activity.

With hundreds of competitors at the event, there was a continual rotation of matches taking place at all times. It was organized chaos.

The Scotties placed just second behind Dawson County, and four individual wrestlers finished in the top three in their weight classes.

Although some of the wrestlers didn't have their best weekend, head coach Jory Casterline thought the team did well overall.

Reflecting on the weekend, Casterline repeated what he said last week, "We need to work on maintaining a wrestling mindset,and the kids need to wrestle for six minutes."

He stressed the importance of the kids getting as much time on the mat as they can. "They aren't going to get any experience if they get on the mat and try to pin someone right away. I keep telling them, 'We gotta take our beatings before we can hand them out.'"

For example, Casterline pointed out Justin Walton, a junior on the team. "I am so proud of him," he said of Walton. "He fought all the way through a six-minute match against a tough competitor at the mixer in Wolf Point. It's probably the hardest he's ever had to work, but he did it. That's what I want all of them to do."

The Scotties will be in Great Falls this Saturday, Dec. 17 for the CMR Invitational. They will be one man short, however, as Jacob Meiers is out with an injury for a period of time.
