Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Borghild "Borgie" Marie (Hove) Skyberg, age 89, of Fort Peck, Mont., passed away Friday, Dec. 9,, 2016, at her son's home in Greenville, S.C.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bonnie Novak officiating. A luncheon will follow services at the church with burial taking place in the Fort Peck Cemetery following the luncheon.
Borgie, the first daughter of Andrew and Mabel Hove, was born on June 19, 1927, in Glendive, Mont. She was raised on the family homestead east of Vida, and graduated from Wolf Point High School. After graduation, she attended the Holy Rosary Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her nursing degree. She worked in Thief River Falls, Minn., Wolf Point, and then at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital (FMDH) in Glasgow.
While working at the hospital in Wolf Point, she met and married Melvin T. Skyberg on Oct. 7, 1956. In the early 1960s, they purchased a farm and ranch north of Fort Peck on the Missouri River where they raised four boys, many head of cattle, bushels of grain and bales of hay. She retired from FMDH in 2001, but continued to work as a Home Health Nurse until Parkinson's caused her to leave her 53-year nursing career.
She enjoyed gardening, canning in the fall, sewing, quitting and dabbled in raising registered Herefords. In her later years she enjoyed sitting at her dining room table watching the wildlife along the Missouri River. She was a true Norwegian, making lefse and lutefisk during the holidays. She enjoyed family gatherings "talking story," loved having family and friends near. She was very active in the Fort Peck Lutheran Church, and after her husband, Melvin, passed in 1991, she completed "the Gifts Program," becoming a Lay Pastoral Associate.
She also enjoyed traveling and wasn't afraid to jump in the car to visit her son in Las Vegas or Tucson, where he was stationed in the U.S. Air Force, her sister, Olga, in Seattle, or wherever she had the desire to go. When she finally had to stop driving, her last vehicle had over 300,000 miles on it, and never stopped letting the family know she still wanted to be behind the wheel. When she moved to South Carolina to live with her son, James, she was proud to tell anyone who asked how wonderful Montana and living on a working ranch was.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mabel Hove; a husband, Melvin; three brothers, Archie Hove, Stanley Hove, and Lawrence Hove; and a sister, Olga (Hove) Monroe.
Survivors include four sons; Steve Skyberg of Columbia Heights, Mont., Richard Skyberg and his wife, Sharon, of Havre, James Skyberg and his wife, Carol, of Greenville, S.C., and Paul Skyberg and his wife, Bobbi, of Fort Peck; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Hove, of Circle; a brother-in-law, Buster Skyberg and his wife, Dorothy, of Fort Peck; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
