Remembering Business

Do you ever drive down the streets of your town and remember all of the businesses that used to be? I didn’t spend all of my early years in Glasgow and I don’t remember all the business that used to be, even in the early 60s, however I do have some friends that remember a lot of them. Now, I credit their good memory to the fact that they may have had jobs that required delivery at the residence or building. We have had daily newspaper delivery, I think from both Courier and State daily papers. Then grocery stores delivered a lot of groceries in the earlier years, as well as some pharmacies. Those (mostly young) persons so employed had the opportunity to meet residents, know addresses and maybe remember that John Doe lived next to the old bowling alley.

I do remember when Newton Motors was located on corner of 2nd St. So. Wow, one day in the recent past I found myself telling someone about something that was located in the old Newton Motors building, which meant nothing to them. I immediately remembered the things I thought when my Dad would say, “you remember,” about something that probably happened when I was a toddler.

This doesn’t just happen in Glasgow. So many of our small town residents do the same. We still have many residents that remember businesses, schools, churches that are long gone, but we still use them as a reference point, much to the annoyance of the young. My theory—don’t let it bother you, some day our grandchildren will be annoyed with their older acquaintances will do the same to them.
