William "Bill" Winthrop Silver, 86, passed away Nov. 4, 2016, at Landmark Hospital in Murray, Utah.
Cremation has taken place and services are pending. Inurnment was at Point Loma Cemetery in San Diego, Calif. A memorial tribute will be held at the Town Hall in St. Marie at a later date. It will be posted on the bulletin board.
He was born March 12, 1930, to Gertrude (Steeves) and John J. Silver of Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1948 he enlisted in the Navy and retired in 1977 as a Lt. Commander. During his Navy career, he was able to travel the world and shared many stories of his adventures. On April 7, 1970, he was aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) ship which assisted in picking up the Apollo 13 astronauts after their mission.
He served on the Condo Village Board and the Fire Department Board. He belonged to the Montana Group Bowling Alley and was active on the lanes, bar and restaurant. It was an enjoyable place for all to go.
He was instrumental in making the Town Hall into offices and a place to conduct meetings. Then last, but not least, there is the famous Liars Club. Through the years this club has been enjoyed by many. He loved his home in St. Marie and had many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Jackie Silver and Trudy Gorsuch.
Survivors include a niece, Colleen Carter of Hawaii; a nephew, Michael Gorsuch of Dennis, Miss.; four great-nieces, Sabrinna and Stephanie Simonson, and Josie and Anna Midgett; two great-nephews, Robert Midgett of Montana and Judy Midgett of Florida; three great-great-nephews, Calvin, Walter and Clayton White of Havre; two great-great-nieces, Blake Simonson and Corissa White of Havre, and one great-great-great-niece, Cambria.
He is missed by many friends and neighbors who are fortunate he passed through our lives.
