Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
I was remembering the other day just what a thrill it was to get to spend time with some friends of my folks. These people lived some distance from town and didn’t have all of the conveniences my family did. Since living without these conveniences wasn’t something I had to do on a daily basis, I considered it an adventure to get to stay there.
The first thing was no running water. Now this was not the only home I was in that had a water bucket and dipper located close to the outside door, but I was always in awe. Those were the days when your only thought was a refreshing drink, not all of the germs that were being passed on by everyone using the dipper. Maybe we built more immunity to colds back then.
Eventually the evening hours came and the kerosene lamps were lit. Maybe we played cards, or tied a piece of paper with a string to play with the cat. Those were the things that impressed me. I am sure cooking facilities fit the rest of the setting, but that didn’t concern me as somehow food magically appeared.
Today, a lot of us don’t even have those inconveniences when we go camping. I wonder if children of today would consider those things fun. Well, maybe, but I am not sure just where they would be introduced to that style of living.
