Kay Ellen Dorr

Kay Ellen Dorr, age 72, of Glasgow, Mont., passed away on Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Billings Clinic.

She was born on Oct. 13, 1943, in Glasgow, to Ross Coffey Dorr and Evelyn Mihm Dorr. She was the youngest of four children. She attended elementary and high school in Glasgow. Following high school graduation, she attended Rocky Mountain College for a year and transferred to Montana State University attending from 1962 to 1965, graduating with a bachelor of science in general studies. From 1965 to 1967 she attended the University of Montana, receiving a masters in guidance and counseling. She later attended Auburn University from 1975 to 1979 and received her Ph.D.

She was employed at the Anaconda Job Corps Center from June through September of 1967. She also worked at the Yellowstone Boy's Ranch in Billings, from 1967 to 1971 as a social service director. In 1971 she was employed as a resident counselor at the Micronesian Occupational Center in Koror, Palau, Western Caroline Islands. This Center was a technical residential school for Micronesian students.

Her life-long employment began with Eastern Montana Community Mental Health Center in 1972. She was a counselor with this agency, as well as a supervisor for a branch office. During her employment with the Mental Health Center, she was employed as a clinical psychologist as well as an associate director for a five-county area. She did clinical supervision of mental health services as well as conducted psychological evaluations and individual/family counseling. She was a certified mental health professional and was also a licensed school psychologist. She retired from EMCMHC in October of 2011. However she did fill in on a part-time basis from 2011 until November of 2014.

She was a member of the American Psychological Association, the Montana Psychological Association, and the Nation Association of School Psychologists. She served on the Montana Board of Medical Examiners, the Board of Psychologists, as well as the Foster Care Review Committee.

In January of 2003, Dr. Dorr received an award from the Mental Health Legislative Association for Long-Term Service to Mental Health in Montana. She dedicated her life to helping others and touched the lives of many. She had a love for nature, animals and people. She loved working outdoors and enjoyed working with the land. She was a well-read woman who always enjoyed learning about other cultures, religions and beliefs. She took a special interest in working with Native Americans and learning and working with their traditional, spiritual and healing practices.

She was an avid supporter of the local and state-wide Humane Society, the Montana Audubon Organization, the National Wildlife Federation as well as the Glasgow Mental Health Center. Please make any memorials to the Glasgow Mental Health Center.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Jerry Hould; her mother and father; a niece, Zandra Liegh Dorr M.D., and a nephew, Terry Bowman.

Survivors include two sisters, Grace Bowman and Bonnie Francesca Parker; a brother, Lee Ross and his wife, Barbara; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many long-time friends, co-workers, colleagues and consumers, as well as her two dogs, Bodhi and Ahli, and her two cats, Tiger and Beauty. She will be missed by many.

A memorial service for Kay was held Tuesday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at the Bell Mortuary in Glasgow with Bonnie Novak officiating. A private burial will be held on the homestead. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
