Fiber in Glasgow

Most people don’t like slow internet. But I, a gamer in NE Montana (the middle of nowhere), have nightmares about slow internet.

Now, people with actual work to do must feel some anger when they are inhibited or slowed by their internet speeds. At least, I would imagine so. The point is, the city of Glasgow needs fiber optic cable.

I have seen a few posts on Facebook from Glasgow residents, who are not really sure what the problem is or what to do to fix the issue. All they know is that they have slow internet and they hate it. DSL, which I assume most Glasgow residents have in their home, carries its signal through existing telephone wires. These can easily be interfered with, and can slow down considerably the farther you get from the provider. Fiber optic cable contains optical fibers, which send signals as light much more quickly and with less interference. Fiber optics are also more secure. The top speed possible with this process has yet to be determined.

So let’s think here. Fiber optics offer: Faster speeds, fewer interruptions, more secure connections and a high ceiling to improve speeds.

Wow, Parker, that sounds great! Why don’t we have that here?

To be frank, I don’t know. I am no expert on this, but I would say that it probably costs a sizable amount.

It would probably require a lot of work and paperwork to add this to our existing infrastructure, but I believe it would be absolutely worth it.

Google has started to offer its own Fiber services in a few U.S. cities. Their speeds start at 1,000 megabits per second. An average package in Glasgow is six to ten megabits. That is one hundred times faster!

I have heard that Nemont, our main internet service provider, which is a cooperative, has a member meeting in the fall. So if you are interested in getting fiber in our area, attendance at this meeting comes highly recommended. But for now, good luck loading that web page, see you in a month or two.
