Middle School Tracksters Compete

Solid Performances at Nashua Invitational

With springtime weather and availability of venues both frustrating schedules, pulling off a full middle school track meet is equal parts good timing and better luck.

A number of area schools had both factors working in their favor last Saturday, at the Nashua Porcupine Invitational track meet held at Glasgow High School’s track. Glasgow’s thinclads turned out only 7th graders for the meet. The reason is that only 6th and 8th graders will compete at next week’s Culbertson Invitational, so allowing 7th graders to compete at Nashua’s meet gives all classes an equal amount of competition.

Team scores were not kept, but here are some standouts from the regional squads.

In the 100m, Nashua’s Dylan Sanner took fourth place with a 13.24. The highest Glasgow finisher was Colten Fast in 14th place with a 14.71. On the girls side, Kaitlyn Hansen of Nashua took silver with a 14.76 while teammates Mattea Piersak and Anika Peters took 8th and 9th places, respectively.

Hinsdale’s Cordell Younkin finished fifth in the boys 200m in 28.94, and Bailee Baxter of Glasgow was the highest-finishing girl from the area, posting a 32.24 for 7th place. In the girls 400m, Mandy Fuhrmann took 6th place in 1:16.17.

In the distance events, Nashua’s Ali Cunningham took 6th place in the girls 800m, Juelz Bauer of Frazer took fifth in the 1,600m.

Loden Idler from Hinsdale came in third in the 100m hurdles, followed by Glasgow’s Fast. On the girls side, Kaitlyn McColly of Hinsdale just edged Nashua’s Kaitlyn Hansen; Piersak took fourth place. And in the girls 200m hurdles, Glasgow’s Keeli Harris took silver; Fuhrmann from Opheim finished fourth.

In the field, Sanner took third in the boys shotput with a throw of 34 feet, 3 inches. Glasgow’s Davyn Myrick won the girls shot with a 33-foot, 9-inch put. Brennan Peters of Nashua finished fifth. Jesse Lee of Hinsdale was the top local finisher in the boys discus; Myrick took fifth place on the girls side, followed by Nashua’s Peters in 6th place.

Lee, from Hinsdale, took fourth place in the boys high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches; Dylan Benner from Opheim took fifth place with the same height.

Nashua’s Sanner won the boys long jump with a 15' 10.5” leap; on the girls side, McColly won the long jump, Piersak took second. Ethan Viste of Nashua was runner-up in the boys triple jump; Idler of Hinsdale took 5th. On the girls side, McColly took another gold medal, Anika Peters finished fourth, and Rachelle Glaser of Glasgow took 6th place.

And in the girls pole vault, McColly took first, Harris of Glasgow took second, Hannah Toavs of Glasgow finished third, and Jaycee Erickson of Saco took 4th place. On the boys vault, Ty Murphy of Saco took first; Hinsdale’s Younkin finished in 5th place.

Many of these local teams will meet again this Saturday, April 23, at the Glasgow Invitational, held at Scottie Field.
