Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Glasgow Earns Two Team Trophies in Academic Olympics

It's a fact: we grow 'em smart here in Valley County, and we've got trophies to prove it.

The annual High School Academic Olympics were held here in Glasgow Wednesday, March 23.

GHS was well represented, with two teams of five students demonstrating their capabilities in written and oral competitions throughout the day.

Glasgow Team 1: Micah Tweten, Tanner Overby, Luke Breigenzer, Zach Miller, Mary Fewer, and Glasgow Team 2: Ben Miller, Hannah Mickelson, Rachel Sigmundstad, Logan Gunderson, and Trevor Toavs.

The written part of the competition was held in the morning and consisted of four 45 minute tests in English, Science, Math, and Social Studies.

The results on the written tests were as follows:

Note that some events had ties with students earning the same score on a test.

Zach Miller: 2nd, English; 2nd, Math; 1st, Math; 2nd, Social Studies.

Mary Fewer: 7th, English; 6th, Math.

Trevor Toavs: 7th, English.

Logan Gunderson: 6th, Math; 8th, Social Studies.

Luke Breigenzer: 1st, English; 4th, Science; 2nd, Math.

Tanner Overby: 5th, Science; 3rd, Social Studies.

Ben Miller: 2nd, Science (tied with his brother).

Students with the highest sums on the four written tests are also recognized. This year – for the first time in 24 years – all the top students were from Glasgow: Freshman Ben Miller, Sophomore Tanner Overby, Junior Luke Breigenzer, and Senior Zach Miller.

In the afternoon, the students competed in an oral quiz bowl type event against teams from Glendive, Malta, Plentywood, Wolf Point, and Chinook.

In the oral rounds, GHS' Team 1 advanced to the final round after three wins. Team two had the benefit of a first-round bye, and claimed two additional wins to advance.

With the efforts of both teams evident, both Glasgow teams would meet in the final round of the competition.

Although the competition was close, GHS' Team 1 eventually claimed the title, winning on the last two questions.

This year's two team trophies are on display in the High School office, joining the trophy won last year in the written rounds.
